Sussex-Area Woman Petitions to Become Waukesha County Clerk

Jessie Read is the sole Democrat running for Waukesha County Clerk, joining three Republicans who have already announced their bids. The incumbent clerk, Kathy Nickolaus, said she will not seek re-election.

While voters filed in and out of the , Jessie Read was outside hoping to secure that last handful of supporters she needs.

Read is registered to run for Waukesha County Clerk, and she's inching toward the last few signatures she needs to get her name on ballot in November's election. they're running for County Clerk, making Read the only Democrat to step up.

"I decided to run because, first, I am just dismayed by the election process," Read said, referring to the during incumbent clerk Kathy Nickolaus' term. "With my business and accounting skills, I think I'd be great at the job."

With around 30 signatures collected before noon on election day, Read said she has a total of more than 400 signatures. And with a June 1 deadline, she says she's not worried about reaching the 500 signatures she needs to get on the ballot.

"I think I'll have my signatures," Read said, smiling and waving at residents filing into the Sussex Armory.

Read says she wants people to "Take a H.I.N.T.," meaning she stands for honesty, integrity, nonpartisanship and transparency. On her campaign website, the Town of Lisbon resident says she has "lost confidence that the election vote counting process is accurate," and she's determined "to bring the idea of public service back into this government office."

And with this fall, Read will , pending they also get enough signatures.
