Week Ahead: School Closure Debate, Polka Concert and Used Book Sale

Pistol Pete's wants to renovate:  wants to turn an existing attached garage into a banquet hall / game room, erect canopies over the west building entrance and over part of the deck and expand the deck to add a storage area for seasonal items. The Plan Commission will review the plans at its 6:30 p.m. meeting Monday at City Hall, 2000 N. Calhoun Road. 

Longer ban on building in the Shire: City staff is proposing again extending a 2004 moratorium on development of additional housing in the Shire subdivision, southwest of Gebhardt and Brookfield Roads. Staff wants the moratorium extended until Sept. 1, 2012 to analyze the area's suitability for development on a closed landfill site. This is also on the Plan Commission's agenda Monday night.

Hammering out teacher benefits: In the post-collective bargaining world, the Elmbrook School Board's Personnel Committee will discuss potential changes to employee benefits, such as health plan designs, sick days and retiree health insurance. The committee meets at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the district offices, 13780 Hope St.

Capital improvements: The city's Board of Public Works and Water and Sewer Board may approve five-year capital improvement plans at their meetings, starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 2000 N. Calhoun Road.

Special education changes for fall: Parents with children in special education classes at Elmbrook School District are invited to a meeting at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to discuss changes in the high school schedule and other concerns. The meeting is at district offices, 13780 Hope St.

Elmbrook school closure debate: The Elmbrook School Board will hold a work session starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to discuss potential school closure options. Materials for the meeting can be viewed on the district's website. 

Events

Register for fall soccer: The Town of Brookfield will begin accepting fall soccer registrations on Tuesday. The fall season runs from the week of September 12 to October 17. Contact the town Park and Recreation Department for more information at 262-796-3781.

Lego City: Wauwatosa architect John Peine will discuss the origins of legos and basics of architecture before children build their own creations. Two hourlong sessions are scheduled for 2 and 3 p.m. Monday at the , 1900 N. Calhoun Road. 

Polka concert: The Happy Dutchmen Trio will perform polkas and ethnic favorites from 12 to 1 p.m. Wedesday in the Civic Plaza between the  and the , 2100 N. Calhoun Road. 

Used book and music sale: The Friends of the Brookfield Library will hold their  Friday through Sunday at the library, 1900 N. Calhoun Road. Fiction, nonfiction, hardcover, softcover, children's and audio books will be available, all under $2. Proceeds from the annual event benefits the library.

Brookfield Farmers' Market: The  is held from 7:30 a.m. to noon every Saturday through October, attracting about 4,000 people weekly. It's held in the Civic Plaza next to , 2000 N. Calhoun Road.
