Will Quarry Project Make Brookfield More Desirable?

A large crowd of Brookfield residents showed up with many questions during a public meeting last week regarding the proposal for the former quarry lands, and Patch users remain torn on whether to support the plan.

While many residents at a public meeting discussing plans for the former quarry lands expressed opposition for the plan, upset for a variety of reasons, some support of the project has trickled forward.

"This is a VERY POSITIVE proposal and needs to happen," Patch user Andy Smith wrote on an article from the meeting. "People are out-of-their-gourd 'emotional' about this and dealing in fear mongering. The "lake" is not going to be filled in — it's going to be a major feature of a NEW 60-acre PUBLIC park. The northeast neighborhoods of Brookfield (among the oldest) need a neighborhood park — the city master plan recognizes a lack of public park space and neighborhood recreational areas in this area of the city."

The proposal involves using the space as an area to dump "clean fill material," from highway projects, that would eventually shape the land and prepare it for development. A 60-acre park as well as a residential area are proposed for the space; the site is a total of 85-acres, which includes a 23-acre quarry lake.

Many residents have complained about the construction trucks that would drive the area for up to seven years before the project would be complete, as well as impacts on the environment as well as what they call a lack of communication from the city on the project.

"How does this messy construction, multi-family apartment buildings and reliance on a developer who has nothing to lose make the City of Brookfield more desirable?" Patch user DICK STEINBERG asked on an article about the issue.

Do you think this proposal improves the city in the long-term? Why, or why not?
