Breathalyzer Policy Meant as 'Deterrent' for Students

Discussions to add the policy that would allow administrators to administer the tests at sporting events or other school activities have been met with a supportive attitude, officials say.

A policy allowing Elmbrook School District administrators to give breathalyzer tests to students when there is reasonable suspicion could be approved before the start of the school year.

The Elmbrook School Board met Tuesday night for a first reading of the policy that Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Dana Monogue said has been "an ongoing discussion for some time."

The policy, posted on the school district's website, is meant to ensure students' safety while providing administrators the tools needed to maintain such an atmosphere.

"Not unlike any high school in the state, we periodically deal with students who make bad decisions about consuming alcohol before school events," Monogue said. "It truly is meant to be a deterrent. In speaking with administrators from surrounding districts, they attest to the fact that the use of these devices has been effective."

The Teaching and Learning Committee will continue to revise the wording in the policy at its Aug. 15 meeting, Monogue said, and the board will take a vote at its Aug. 27 meeting.
