East, Central Need Two Wins Each for Tournament Showdown

Both teams are among favorites to earn berth in state finals.

Brookfield East is the No. 2 seed and Central is the No. 3 in the 16-team sectional for the WIAA Division 1 boys soccer tournament, which begins Tuesday.

The Spartans (17-4-0, 5-2-0 Greater Metro Conference) host 15th seed Milwaukee Hamilton at 7 p.m. The Lancers (8-3-1, 4-3-0 Greater Metro Conference) take on 14th-seeded Plymouth, also at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

East won the sectional a year ago, beating Waukesha West before losing 6-2 in the semifinals to conference rival Marquette. The unbeaten Hilltoppers are the top seed in a different sectional, and own a 3-2 win over both Central and East this year. East has advanced to the state finals 14 times in its history.

Mark Heydt leads the Spartans with seven goals and 12 assists for 26 points, according to statistics listed at WisSports.net.

Central has been to state seven times, but not since 2001. The Lancers lost three league games, all by one goal, to Marquette, city rival East and Menomonee Falls. The Indians, who have never been to the state finals, are the top seed in the sectional.

According to statistics listed at WisSports.net, Brad Jakober leads the Lancers with eight goals and six assists for 22 points. Notable among them is this amazing bicycle kick against Marquette.

After the opening-round games, East faces the winner of Cedarburg and Homestead, while Central meets the winner of Tosa East and Sussex Hamilton. The intracity showdown would be Oct. 20 at a site to be determined.
