East Drama, Best Buddies Collaborate for 'The Boys Next Door'

Putting on a high school theater production about the lives of developmentally disabled men was "risky," Brookfield East High Drama Department Director Joshua Grant-Konegni concedes.

But he adds, "I can honestly say that the actors and crew have risen to the occasion."

The Drama Department is presenting its spring theatrical production 'The Boys Next Door' by Tom Griffin.

After opening the run Friday night, performances continue at 7:30 p.m. tonight (March 31) and 2 p.m. Sunday (April 1) at the in the Kuttemperoor Auditorium.

The BEHS Drama Department strives to create art that promotes community involvement and social justice.

The three-hour show with intermission weaves a compassionate, humorous tale about the lives of four developmentally disabled men living in a group home.

"It is a heartwarming, zany, and emotionally charged piece that calls for social change and argues for the rights of individuals with disabilities," Grant-Konegni said.

"While this is high school theatre, this production is much more," he said.

The actors collaborated with East's Best Buddies, an organization that strives to assist adolescent individuals with disabilities lead fulfilling lives.

The collaboration helped the actors "breathe life into their characters and understand the complexities of living with a disability day in and day out," Grant-Konegni said.
