East High Seniors Score Honors

Brookfield East High School honored dozens of seniors, faculty and community members at its 2011 Recognition Night.

seniors were honored last week with a flurry of scholarships, awards and recognitions at the .

David Frank, president of the , awarded 12 $1,500 scholarships to East High students. EEF has awarded more than $1 million to Elmbrook's graduating seniors since the organization's creation in 1958.

Among the EEF awards were memorial and honorary scholarships named in honor of Nancy Marsho, principal at from 1992 to 2004; Irven Hoesly, the first principal of from 1958 to 1985; and the Brookfield Women's Club, which donated its reserves to EEF for scholarships after the club disbanded in 2006.

Marsho said as she read about the scholarship nominees "what really jumped out at me... were the embedded values that I know flourished here at Brookfield East High School but were embedded when they were young children."

She gave an award to former Tonawanda student Nick Tongas, who kicked off the honors night ceremony by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. "I know where he learned the Pledge of Allegiance," Marsho joked.

Lisa Lingle's voice faltered as she announced Natalie Dillon as the first recipient of the new scholarship in honor of her father, Irven Hoesley.

Numerous students returned time and again to the stage, including Tongas, Joanna Swinarska, Reem Elorbany, Kathleen Cashin, Michael Meidl and Tyler Karian.

Awards ranged from athletics and academics to fine arts, forensics, activities and military appointments.

East High Principal Dan Pavletich gave Impact Awards to retiring fine arts teachers Anne Marie Peterson (orchestra), Mary Bigus (choir) and Linda Aeppler (drama and English), saying they had had a "profound" impact on students for decades and won competitions too numerous to cite.
