Elmbrook Student Wins Entrepreneur Award With App Creation

Student Sara Linderman created SongJudge, a music app that allows musicians to select a song, record a performance and receive a score based on accuracy, tone, articulation, volume and tempo.

Editor's note: The following information is taken from a press release submitted by the Elmbrook School District.

Pilgrim Park Middle School student Sara Linderman was the grand prize winner in the Wisconsin Youth Entrepreneurs in Science (YES) contest! Sponsored by the Wisconsin Technology Council and modeled after the Governor’s Business Plan Contest, Wisconsin YES operates with a mission to help young people learn how science and technology innovations can be developed into solid business plans.

Sara created SongJudge, a music app that allows musicians to select a song, record a performance and receive a score based on accuracy, tone, articulation, volume and tempo. Sara who plays the flute, developed the idea as she looked for a way to objectively determine her performance ability as she prepared for competitions and auditions. She presented her plan to more than 250 people at the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Conference earlier this month.

Wisconsin students, from middle school to 12th grade, were eligible to enter the Wisconsin YES contest individually or in small teams. Students submitted ideas in a 250-word online summary to compete in Phase I of the contest. Professionals from across the State acted as judges, providing feedback and scored the ideas. The top seventeen entries were selected to move to Phase 2 and were asked to submit 1,000 word executive summaries including a company overview, product or service description, customer definition, market description size and sales strategy, competition, management team, financials, and capital needs.
Several other PPMS students were recognized for their submissions including:
  • Grand Prize winner - Sara Linderman for her idea (Songjudge)
  • 2nd place - Colin Gray-Hoehn (Guardian Angel Helmets)
  • 3rd place Shyam Mani, Ryan Wolff, Jack Turicek (Gel Tooth Earbuds)

Commendation for finalists included:

  • Liz Tripi
  • Anna Sipek
  • Sean Glatch
  • Team of Suchir Bhatt - Bashar Zaidat - Tim Vrakas

Pilgrim Park teacher and Wisconsin YES advisor Barb Wood was also recognized as the recipient of the 2013 Wisconsin YES “Gold Star Teacher” award. Barb received this award for being a teacher who went above and beyond in her efforts to coach students through the Wisconsin YES contest process. Barb received a certificate and Pilgrim Park will receive a $500 award. More information can be found at: http://www.wisconsinyes.com.
