Elmbrook's ACT Scores at All-Time High

The 2011 graduates at Brookfield East and Central high schools scored record-high composite ACT scores for the Elmbrook School District, leaders announced.

East seniors scored an average 25.3, up from 24.9 in 2010. Central seniors earned an average 25.0, up from 24.7. East's score was the best among all Waukesha County high school and the fourth-best in the state.

The 2011 statewide average score was 22.2.

"We are thrilled with these results," Superintendent Matt Gibson said in a press release. "Our dedicated teaching staff, rigorous academic programs and hard-working students deserve recognition for this major achievement."

School Board member Glen Allgaier noted at a recent committee meeting that Elmbrook has among the highest levels of test participation. In the most recent school year, 300 Central High seniors took the test and 275 East seniors.

To have a greater number of students taking the exam and still maintaining a high average composite score is a major accomplishment, Allgaier said.

Annually, 80 to 90 percent of Elmbrook's seniors take the ACT exam, according to state Department of Public Instruction data on Brookfield Central and East High. In 2010-11, 91 percent of East's seniors took the ACT and 85 percent of Central's seniors took the exam.

Gibson noted that both schools have won the ACT Red Quill award for their work to increase their annual scores.
