Profiles Kenya’s Maathai
Milwaukee, WI--TAKING ROOT, the story of a woman whose efforts to plant trees in her native Kenya also nurtured social reform in her country, will be previewed at MPTV Community Cinema Thursday, Dec. 1, at 6:30 p.m.
The event, which includes a discussion of the film, will take place at Discovery World, 500 N. Harbor Drive. The presentation is free and open to the public.
The documentary profiles Wangari Maathai, who died on Sept. 26. She was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for beginning her grassroots Green Belt Movement in the East African country. She encouraged rural women to plant trees and to work against deforestation, other causes of poverty, and political oppression.
Today, more than 35 million trees grow in Kenya, deeply altering the country’s physical and social appearance. In addition, the country installed a democratic government in 2002.
Participating in the discussion will be Chima J. Korieh, professor of African history at Marquette University; Ian Brown, a supervisor with the City of Milwaukee Forestry Department, and Tim Vargo, manager of research and citizen science, Urban Ecology Center.
The documentary will be broadcast Jan. 8 on MPTV 36.1 HD at 11 p.m.
