Eighth-ranked Lancers can't keep pace with No. 1 Warhawks in opening game, 73-58.

Both Germantown and Brookfield Central were ranked in the preseason state coaches poll, but only the Warhawks were No. 1.

They played like it Tuesday in defeating the eighth-ranked Lancers 73-58 in the season-opening game for both teams.

Germantown led 10-2 and the Lancers got no closer than six at any point after that. Their three-point shooting kept the margin reasonable in the first half; senior Jack Sandstrom knocked down four in the first half and Jason Meichtry and Seth Mortag each made two.

The Warhawks had a 43-35 halftime lead, however, as they scored both inside and out. They made seven first-half 3-pointers, while 6-foot-10 junior Luke Fischer scored 14 points in the first 16 minutes.

Fischer committed his third foul within the first minute of the third quarter, but the Warhawks only stretched the lead, first to 50-35, then 61-43 by the end of the quarter.

Brookfield Central is at West Allis Hale on Friday in its first Greater Metro Conference game, and then hosts JP Tokoto and Menomonee Falls next Friday.
