Ribbon Run Raises $5K for Cancer

Students at Brookfield Elementary School spent the school day on Wednesday running around the building in an effort to raise money for the  Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, Inc. — and their work paid off.

The students raised about $5,000 to benefit the MACC Fund, which was the goal, said Michelle Bond, a physical education teacher at the school. This earns the student an opportunity to "slime" their teachers next Wednesday, Bond said.

Tuesday's Ribbon Race was in part inspired by fifth-grader Maggie Conlon, who was born with a tumor the size of a golf ball when she was just six weeks old. Conlon underwent treatment for the next 19 months of her life, and is now cancer free, according to her dad, Eric. Conlon helps the MACC fund in other ways, appearing at fundraisers to hand out t-shirts or to be a living example of the way the organization helps save kids' lives.

The MACC Fund was founded in 1976 and has contributed $41 million dollars to childhood cancer and related blood disorder research, according to its website.
