Would You Make A Good School Board Member?

Officials say commitment is the No. 1 quality they are seeking in applicants interested in assuming the School Board seat recently vacated by Michael Mishlove.

In response to the resignation of Michael Mishlove, the Shorewood School Board discussed its desired qualifications Tuesday for applicants who want to assume the position.

“Anybody who is interested, willing to learn, and willing to be committed to the job should apply,” said School Board member Ruth Treisman.

But, the primary attribute officials are seeking is commitment.

The board is looking for someone who will dedicate the necessary time and energy into performing a quality job in the seat. The board emphasized the job is not just attending regular meetings; there is a lot more that goes into it.

“I’m really looking for chemistry … a person who is willing to listen and learn,” said Board President Rob Reinhoffer.

The members also mentioned that they are looking for someone who can identify with student interests while serving on the board.

“I think we should try to find somebody with a student-centered focus when analyzing issues,” said Board Vice President Colin Plese.

Mishlove resigned in October due what he said where the dynamics as a result of changes on the School Board. Mishlove served on the school board for more than six years, where he played a role in labor negotiations.

“I think it’d be nice to have another woman on the board … as well as representation from Atwater,” added board member David Cobb.

It is scary to see some of the comments of the school board members --- such as need another woman, or someone from Atwater --- maybe they should do it like the Voice singing competition on TV and not know the gender or background or looks of the person applying, but base their decisions on a narrative of why they would want to serve on the board and what they feel they can contribute. If history is any indication of the future --- the oral interviews will be a waste of time, as they will have someone pre-selected, if not actually lobbied by one or more members to apply --- someone who will "go along" and who doesn't have the heart to actually run for an office, but will gladly go in the back door.

The last thing we need is someone who wants to go in the back door.

I don't think it's scary at all. They're simply voicing what they would like to see: Someone who brings in a perspective that's currently not being represented, and someone with good collaboration skills. I'm glad that's what they're looking for. The reality is that women often do have a different perspective--and an Atwater parent would have perspective on what the challenges and strengths are in that school. Also, while I usually bristle at the term "student-centered" (as in "student-centered learning," which can be code for "let them figure it out on their own and flounder"), I do think it's important to have the student perspective represented on the board in some way. We adults have to remember to ask them their opinions!

Lets ask the kids what they want. Candy for lunch. Recess all day. No schools on days that end in "y".
