Year In Review: Top Brookfield School Stories Of 2012

In 2012, Brookfield experienced a wave of school news including the hiring of Mark Hansen as district superintendent, a law suit that may end up in the Supreme Court and the closing of an elementary school.

For the next few days, we will be reviewing the top stories of 2012 by category.

5. Brookfield East Football team finishes regular season with perfect record; Central also makes the playoffs
Both Brookfield East and Brookfield Central had a great season, making it to the playoffs. 

4. School Board says "no" to 4K
Despite the superintendent's pleas to craft an acceptable 4-year-old kindergarten program for the 2013-14 school year, the Elmbrook School Board in February decided to pull 4K from board discussion.

3. Lawsuit over Elmbrook Graduation Ceremony at Church
The Elmbrook School Board asks the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on the lawsuit over whether the district violated the U.S. Constitution by holding graduation ceremonies at Elmbrook Church.

2. Elmbrook: Mark Hansen Will Be Next Superintendent
The Elmbrook School Board hired Mark Hansen as the district's next superintendent in February after Elmbrook Superintendent Matt Gibson retired in June after 17 years leading the district.

1. Hillside Elementary School Closes After Much Debate
In May, parents, teachers, staff and students gathered to remember and say goodbye to Hillside Elementary, a school they called "a home away from home." Memorabilia and artwork were displayed throughout the halls and in the school's cozy library.
