All-Star Week is No Sweat for C.J. Gregg

Fan issue fixed, former Brookfield East star concentrates on the game and his future.

Not even all-state athletes want to spend all week drenched in sweat.

So when his fan broke on the first day of workouts for the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Star Game, C.J. Gregg did not diddle around.

“I called at 7 in the morning (Monday), drenched in sweat (and said), 'Dad, I need another fan,'” said Gregg, the former Brookfield East star.

Dad made the 45-minute trek to UW-Whitewater with a new fan, and Gregg can now feel as fresh and clean as you possibly can during three-a-day practice sessions. Saturday’s Division 1-3 North-South game is at 7 p.m., and Gregg is a wide receiver for the South team.

He said he’s enjoyed getting to know all the players from other teams, those who he’s played against during his high school career. The most impressive athlete of the group, he said, is defensive end John Green of West Allis Central.

“I’ve played against him a couple times, but I’ve never seen how big and actually strong he is until you’re up close,” Gregg said.

Gregg is no slouch himself at 6 feet 5 inches, 205 pounds. He caught 51 passes for 820 yards and 13 scores last year, according to WisSports.net. During the all-star week, Gregg has enjoyed catching balls thrown by South quarterbacks Lance Baretz (Franklin) and Derek Hasanoglu (Mukwonago) and is using the experience as a gauge for future plans.

He had originally intended to play at Stanford, but when Coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff departed, Gregg lost interest in the entire recruiting process and turned his focus to the engineering program at UW-Madison. But he hasn’t ruled out a return to football.

“I’m pretty sure I can do it … for me, it’s more of a question of, can I dedicate to Division I football?” he said. “Can I dedicate to two years of lifting and getting bigger … I have to put on 30 pounds, and I have to look at it, do I love this game this much to put in this much work, and can I balance a Madison engineering school with that?”

The game for players from Divisions 4-7 is at 2 p.m. at Titan Stadium, followed by the game for plays from Divisions 1-3 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the gate.
