Big Day for Brookfield Prep Athletes

East edged Central for tennis crown; both post strong performances in track sectional

By winning three of the four singles flights, Brookfield East edged Brookfield Central 50-45 in total points to capture the Greendale Boys Tennis Sectional on Thursday at Marquette University.

East's flight winners were Tim Corwin at No. 2 singles, Felix Corwin at No. 3 singles and Michael Amato at No. 4 singles. Dan Mackett and Cal Hilkert also teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles. The Spartans play in the WIAA state team tournament in Madison June 10-11. Their quarterfinal opponent is Kenosha Tremper.

Central's Michael Treis won the No. 1 singles flight and Andrew Denu and Kevin Schmidt captured the No. 1 singles flight. Both will advance to the state singles and doubles tournament, respectively, June 2-4. More local players will fill out those brackets, which will be announced soon.

At the Waukesha South Track Sectional, the Central girls had 14 top-three finishes, all of which qualified for the state meet in LaCrosse June 3-4. Kara Krugel qualified in three jump events, and Chidera Obasih made it in the 100, 200 and 400, winning the latter. The Lancers also won the 3,200 relay.

East sent through a pair of qualifiers. Katie Tolan won the 800 and the 1,600 relay team finished second.

On the boys' side, however, East was its usual self. The Spartans send 11 individuals or teams to Madison, including all four relays. Aaron Dillon captured the 110 hurdles and the triple jump, was third in the 200 and a member of the second-place 800 relay team.

For Central, Carl Hirsch won the 3,200, Max Reshel was third in the 800 and the 3,200 relay team also qualified.
