Brookfield East Wins Big in Season Opener

The mission of the first game of the season for a strong team always involves two points:

First, win and win big. Second, play solid football on both sides.

It was mission accomplished Friday night for .

Junior running back Zach Schober led the way with 51 yards rushing and two touchdown runs as East defeated Grafton 55-0 in a solid all-around team effort.

It was indeed 60 solid minutes of football for the Spartans. They kept penalties to a minimum, tackled well, ran the ball well, and the passing game was near perfect.

The only real mistakes the Spartans made all night were mental errors, such as a lineman forgetting to take the field on a point-after attempt in the fourth quarter.

Coach Tom Swittel was pleased with his team's overall performance after the game, but said there is room for improvement.

“For the most part, yes," he said, when asked if he thought the team performed well. "I'm disappointed with all the mental mistakes we had.

“Two guys that were not in there on the point-after attempt. Twice we called a play and we ran in the wrong formation from the sideline to the huddle. We had a guy that just fell asleep and roughed that kid on that last kickoff," Swittel pointed out. "Just stupid things that we have to correct and if we don't, it's going to be a really long year in our conference.”

The game started off fast for Brookfield East. After receiving the opening kickoff, the Spartans took the ball down the field in four plays and less than two minutes into the first quarter.

Schober finished off the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run to give the Spartans a 7-0 early lead. The game slowed down for a while until late in the second quarter when the Spartans scored three touchdowns in the final five minutes of the first half.

The first of the three touchdowns was scored on a one-play drive in which junior quarterback Bryce Pompos dropped back to pass and found junior wide receiver Brian Smith for a 49-yard touchdown pass.

The second score came with just over two minutes to play in the first half, when Pompos found senior wide receiver Micheal Amato for a 36-yard touchdown pass.

East scored again when Pompos found Smith through the air again, this time from six yards out, giving the Spartans a 28-0 halftime lead. That was the key sequence of the game as it ended any real chance Grafton had of pulling out the victory.

Just for safe measure, though, East scored four more TDs in the second half:

Pompos scored on an 11-yard run; Schober on a 6-yard run; Dylan Golla on a 31-yard run; and Nat Schneider on a 14-yard run.

Brookfield East's next game is next Friday at home against Milwaukee South. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
