"Since the beginning of time, man has participated in athletics for the sheer joy of pushing his limits," wrote Hirsch in his essay to the WIAA. "However, it has taught me the value of a strong work ethic and it will continue to impact me as I take on the greatest responsibility of a student athlete; learning the discipline to balance Division 1 College Athletics with college studies."

Each 2013 WIAA Scholar Athlete Finalist will receive a medallion and certificate, and will take with them a special plaque for display in their school’s trophy case.

A Webcast of the awards ceremony will be available at www.wiaawi.org beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 5.
