East, Hamilton Boys Show Strength in Track Regional

They will be favorites to advance numerous athletes to state from Thursday's sectional meet.

Ninety nine percent ain’t bad.

That’s how Brookfield East boys track coach Mike Steiner felt after Monday’s regional at Sussex Hamilton High School that saw nearly everyone who he expected to advance do just that. Full results are here.

“We came here and very much tried to have a championship focus,” Steiner said. “Really the goal is just to get through to the next level; just another step. I thought for the most part the guys handled that pretty well.

“We feel pretty good. Probably 99 percent of what we thought we’d get through we got through, but we had one little hiccup.”

The Spartans continued their domination over their rivals from the Greater Metro Conference as they racked up 175 points and will now send participants to sectionals in 14 different events.

Included in those 14 are four events (high jump, long jump, 110-meter hurdles, discus) where East will have two students competing at sectionals including one (triple jump) where three of the four finalists are Spartans.

Despite their success on the track, Monday’s biggest story arguably came from East’s one "hiccup."

Senior Aaron Thompson, one of the best hurdlers in the state, tripped on a hurdle and knocked it into an opposing runner’s lane midway through the 300-meter race resulting in an automatic disqualification.

“That’s a tough thing for (Thompson),” Steiner said. “He’s the number one-rated hurdler in the state. I’m disappointed for Aaron but we have a strong team and we have to try and regroup and figure out what we can do to pick him up.

“He still made it (to sectionals) in three events, so he’s still got a lot of stuff going on.”

In other area news, Sussex-Hamilton (118.5 points) again fell in East’s large shadow despite shining in numerous events.

The Chargers again dominated the short-range relays, finishing first in the 400- and 800-meter relays, as well as finishing fourth in the 1,600 meter relay. Cameron Clinton-Earl edged Dillon in the 110 hurdles and Chris Harrell won the 200, also over Dillon.

In all, Hamilton will be represented in 10 different events at Thursday’s sectional.

Meanwhile, Brookfield Central (79.5 points) dominated the long-distance portions of the afternoon and had two individuals qualify for sectionals in each of the 1,600 and 3,200. Max Reshel won the 800 and Carl Hirsch captured the 3,200.

The Lancers also advanced individuals in the 400- and 800-meter runs, as well as the 3,200 relay.

Waukesha North will host the area’s sectional Thursday afternoon.
