Lancers Place First, Spartans Third in Cross Country Sectionals

The Central boys beat Waukesha South to head to state; the Lancer girls edged Waukesha West.

Brookfield Central dominated the West Allis Hale Cross County sectionals, with the boys and girls teams taking first place to head to state next weekend in Wisconsin Rapids.

Brookfield East's boys and girls cross-country teams each finished third in Saturday's WIAA Division 1 event at Greenfield Park.

The Lancer boys beat second-place team Waukesha South, 67-89. Central was led by junior Carl Hirsch, who also finished with the meet's best individual score β€” a 15:57 finish. Senior Nick Petersson finished third individually at 16:26.

Brookfield East junior Brad Johnson had the fourth-best individual score of 16:29, and sophomore Stephen Browne, eighth at 16:35. Those two will compete at state based on their top individual scores.

On the girls side, the Lancers edged Waukesha West, 50-54. Brookfield Central sophomore Elizabeth Flatley had the sectional's best individual score of 14:42. Four other girls runners finished very close in time: sophomore Danielle Kulpins and senior Lauren Glomski tied at 16:01, sophomore Paulina Agnello at 16:05 and freshman Megan Hlava at 16:09.

Brookfield East's girls' team trailed behind Central and Waukesha West at 105. But senior Madeline Timm had the fourth-best individual score at 15:39 and junior Shannon Cashin was seventh at 15:53.

It's been a good month for Lancers cross-country: last weekend the boys and girls teams won their Greater Metro Conference titles, with Hirsch and Flatley again finishing first individually as well.
