Fireworks, Fire Pits, Outdoor Burning Banned in City, Town

Fire officials in the city and town of Brookfield imposed bans on outdoor burning — except barbecue grills – and the city is banning all fireworks, including caps and sparklers.

City and Town of Brookfield fire officials Wednesday afternoon imposed an immediate ban on all outdoor burning — except in barbecue grills — and the city also banned use of all fireworks, including caps and sparklers.

The city says it still plans to set off the municipal Fourth of July fireworks display, but adds "a review of this plan is ongoing."

City of Brookfield

Fire Chief Charlie Myers said extremely severe drought conditions necessitated the ban on burning and fireworks, which he said would constitute a public nuisance affecting safety.

Myers said the city's ban includes "fires in all outdoor fireplaces, pits, burning lawn waste, campfires and the private use of consumer fireworks, including sparklers, caps and novelty fireworks.... This ban does not prohibit residents from using contained grills for cooking food."

City ordinances already prohibit the sale, possession and use of all fireworks (except caps and sparklers). Wednesday's ban adds the prohibition on the use of sparklers and caps.

Myers said police officers will "strictly enforce" the ban to prevent fires. Violators, including adults who permit minors' use of any kind of fireworks, caps and sparklers, will receive citations.

The ban will remain in place until further notice. Questions about the ban? Call the Fire Department at (262) 782-8932.

Fire Chief Andrew Smerz imposed a ban "on any outdoor burning, campfires or fire pits." Residents can, however, use commercial outdoor barbeque grills.

Town ordinances prohibit the sale, manufacture, possession and use of fireworks, except for caps, sparklers, toy snakes without mercury, confetti or smoke producing devices as defined in town ordinance.
