Elmbrook Humane Society Rescues Puppy Mill Dogs

The Brookfield shelter last night picked up six dogs rescued at puppy mills from across the Midwest and will prepare them for adoption.

The said today it rescued six dogs from puppy mills across the Midwest as part of a larger rescue operation of more than 40 dogs.

"They all arrived safely at the shelter last night," said Rachel Coolbroth, the shelter's community outreach director.

"We're so happy to rescue these puppies and find them forever homes," she said.

The Best Friends Animal Society of Utah rescued more than 40 dogs and puppies from various Midwestern sites and brought them to Chicago Sunday where they were distributed to area shelters.

The dogs are between the ages of 3 and 7 and will undergo temperament tests and receive vaccines and sterilization, if needed. One dog, a 4-year-old Shiba Inu, has been tentatively named Mushu by employees at the Brookfield shelter and will need some medical attention for an ear infection and hot spot on his backside. Another rescued dog, a Yorkshire Terrier, has an umbilical hernia.

When they are ready to be adopted, the dogs will be posted on Elmbrook Humane Society's web site. The shelter also has opened a donation fund seeking financial help to care for the dogs until they are adopted.

Coolbroth urged people to "keep checking the web site for these special dogs that need and deserve a loving forever home."
