Doctors didn't think the Pilgrim Park eighth grader would survive, but Kerwin is recovering with the help of family, friends and strangers. A benefit Saturday with car wash, auction and dance, will help medical bills.
After Pilgrim Park eighth grader Kerwin Hackett hit his helmeted head on a ski run in South Korea during winter break and was rushed to a hospital with a severe brain injury, his friends were pulled out out of class and told that doctors said he probably wouldn't make it. About 90 percent of people with severe diffuse axonal injuries never regain consciousness, a doctor told Kerwin's father, Nathan, at the hospital on Dec. 30, handing him the injury's Wikipedia definition. But less than two months after the accident, Kerwin was a medical miracle, waiting at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin for his first visitors: his best friend since kindergarten, Nick Davies, and Nick's mother Sara and sister Lauren. "When we got off the elevator Kerwin …

With Hillside Elementary School closing in June, the popular 'Hillside Hawk Walk / Run' transformed to a new event that raised money Sunday for a Hillside scholarship and Wisconsin Hills Middle School needs.
Though the closing of their school building is imminent, the Hillside Elementary community is not willing to let go of everything they've built together there. On May 6, 431 walkers and runners took off at Mitchell Park to keep alive the tradition of the annual Hillside Hawk Walk/Run, this year re-dubbed as Run For the Hills and hosted by Wisconsin Hills Middle School. "It’s bittersweet because we have wonderful memories of doing it for Hillside," said Jenny Schweinert, a parent who organized the event. "But it’s great that we can continue the legacy of the event because so many families will go to the middle school, and we have all these new families that will benefit." Though the final numbers have not been tallied, Schweinert said she …

Brookfield East boys soccer standout Mark Heydt has signed a letter of intent with NCAA Division 1 UW-Milwaukee, according to a release from Brookfield East. Heydt helped Brookfield East qualify for the WIAA state tournament both as a junior and as a senior. He was team captain in 2011 and named first-team All-Greater Metro Conference. “Mark Heydt was a huge part of our success this season and I am confident he will excel at the college level,” said Brookfield East coach Herbert Dundun. “All 3 years with the varsity program, Mark remained an outstanding player and demonstrated a thorough grasp of the game.” UW-Milwaukee is in the market for a new men’s head coach after Chris Whalley was terminated earlier this spring. Studies suggest that the difficult-to-enter workforce is getting harder for college grads, with a higher percentage of recent grads taking longer to find a job than in years past.
College graduates' struggle to find a job in their fields has been a trend for some time now, but according to a Rutgers University study released Thursday, more recent grads are in worse shape. Of students who have graduated college since 2006, 51 percent have a full-time job, according to a HuffingtonPost.com report on the study. "The situation is even more dire for those who have graduated since 2009," the article said. "Fewer than half of college graduates from those years found their first job within 12 months of graduating, much less than the 73 percent of those who graduated from 2006 to 2008. Those who graduated since 2009 are three times more likely to not have found a full-time job than those from the classes of 2006 through 2008…
