Are you looking for a place to mountain bike in Waukesha? A new trail is opening soon at Minooka Park.
Editor’s Note: The following information was provided to Waukesha Patch via a news release from Waukesha County. Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas announced Monday the grand opening of the Waukesha County Park System’s first Mountain Bike Trail within Minooka Park. The first phase, approximately 1.5 miles, will open to residents on Saturday, June 1 (National Trails Day) at 9 a.m. following a ribbon cutting event open to the public. Once all three phases are complete, the network of trails will be about five miles in total length. They are located near picnic shelter 5, within Minooka Park, 1927 E. Hundreds of rugby players from all over the country came to Caledonia to play in the 2013 National Girls Rugby Championship this weekend, including teams from DSHA, Catholic Memorial, Oak Creek and Tosa/Brookfield.
Twenty-four teams from across the country — including teams from Oak Creek, Brookfield, Waukesha and Milwaukee — played at the Caledonia-Mount Pleasant Park in the 2013 National Girls Rugby Championship this weekend. In Division 1, Divine Savior Holy Angels High School defeated Catholic Memorial of Waukesha 27-12 for third place. They were the only two Wisconsin schools in the competition portion. Oak Creek, the Wauwatosa/Brookfield combined team and Kettle Moraine all played in the Festival Division with the junior varsity team from Armstrong MN. SCORE Complex in Racine hosts the 2013 National High School Rugby Girls Championships, and DHSA and Catholic Memorial are among the eight finalists.
Four girls from Brookfield are participating this Saturday and Sunday in the 2013 National High School Rugby Girls Championships at the SCORE Complex in Franksville, WI. Three are students at Divine Savior Holy Angels, a six-time national champion. They are: Also in the tournament is Ashley Ziegler, a freshman at Waukesha Catholic Memorial, which also qualified. DSHA is seeded second in the eight-team Division 1 tournament and faces Amazons of California at 10:15 Saturday in an opening-round match. Catholic Memorial is seeded No. 4 in the Division 1 tournament and opens against Summit, CO, also at 10:15 a.m. Saturday. The championship match at 12:30 p.m. Sunday will be streamed live online.

The upgrades will begin mid-August and end mid-September.
Camelot Park Tennis Courts will be getting a $29,000 upgrade. Upgrades include milling the existing surface, crack filling, asphalt paving, color surfacing and line painting, reported Brookfield Now. Upgrades to the 18 year old tennis courts will begin Aug. 12 and will be completed by Sept. 13.

The dunk tank funds are helping go toward new scoreboards for two fields.
A dunk tank at Brookfield East on Tuesday served as part of a fundraiser toward new scoreboards at the football and soccer fields. Teacher Noah Kaufman — dressed in tie and vest — agreed to sit in and was generous with his time under water.
The longtime supporter of Brookfield East athletics was honored Tuesday, and his family was on hand for the event.
Brookfield East “superfan” Santo Mirasola, who passed away on March 12 at age 77, was honored Tuesday night by the high school’s athletic department. Mirasola had attended almost 400 events at the school over the last decade, and with his wife Pat was a supervisor for soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, track and field and wrestling, said athletic director Cale Vogel. During halftime of the Brookfield Central-Brookfield East girls soccer game, Vogel presented a plaque to the family that will hang at the entrance to the soccer field.

Brookfield Central senior Sarah Fotsch did work on both ends of the pitch in the intracity girls soccer matchup on Tuesday.
If her play hadn’t said enough, the smile across Sarah Fotsch’s face did. “I’ve been waiting four years to beat East,” said the Brookfield Central senior. Fotsch scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal and anchored the Lancers’ defense in a 2-0 shutout of the Spartans on Tuesday at Brookfield East. Central (7-1-2 overall, 2-1-1 in the Greater Metro Conference) had not topped their crosstown rivals during Fotsch’s high school career but won convincingly Tuesday.
