Absentee Voting Growing in Brookfield

With 2 1/2 weeks to go and on the eve of in-person early voting, Brookfield so far has received requests for about one-quarter of the total absentees cast in the 2008 presidential election.

With in-person absentee voting set to begin Monday, Brookfield already has received more than 1,212 completed early ballots, the city clerk's office says. More than 900 additional city voters requested absentee ballots but had not returned them as of Friday. With about 2 1/2 weeks to go before the presidential election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, early voting requests in Brookfield have reached about one-quarter of the total absentee ballots cast in the 2008 presidential election. Early voting has been on the rise in Brookfield for presidential elections, up from 1,854 absentee ballots cast in 1996, to 3,001 in 2000, 6,120 in 2004 and more than 8,820 in 2008, city records show. City Clerk Kelly Michaels said she prefers more …

How Much Did Your Neighbors Give to Obama, Romney?

More Brookfield residents contributed to Obama than to Romney, but the donation amounts were smaller and outpaced by Romney supporters who gave about $22,000 more.

While polls show President Barack Obama may have more support from Wisconsin voters than Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, they also show the gap narrowing. A Marquette University poll released this week shows Obama leading Romney, 53 percent to 42 percent, which is down from the 14-point lead Obama held in the same poll in mid-September.  Despite Obama leading in the polls, Romney is winning the money game in Brookfield. The former governor has garnered $56,651 in contributions from residents through Aug. 31, while Obama received $34,371. More Brookfield residents gave to Obama than Romney (235 people to 130). But Romney supporters gave larger contributions on average. Brookfield residents who gave Obama $1,000 or more …

Vrakas Seeks Funds to Study, Upgrade Elections Equipment

Capital funding would "increase efficiency, accuracy and timeliness of vote reporting," Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas says.

Waukesha County should budget funds next year to study and potentially upgrade its election equipment, Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas said Tuesday. Vrakas included $70,000 in the capital budget he plans to introduce Friday, according to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report. Vrakas said in a press release that he wants to study ways to better automate election results and avoid manual counting by municipalities. "Waukesha County is a rapidly growing County and in recent years the number of reporting units in the County has increased," Vrakas said. "This, coupled with the collecting, tallying and reporting vote totals, have made the process cumbersome. The goal is to automate and streamline the system as much as possible to prevent …

Tommy Thompson Earns GOP Nomination For U.S. Senate Race

It was a tight race throughout the evening, but Wisconsin voters chose to go with a familiar face to challenge U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin in November.

There was only one thing certain heading into the U.S. Senate Republican primary election Tuesday — and it was that nothing was certain. Throughout the state’s five elections this year, perhaps no election gave voters such a perplexing choice as the four GOP candidates for U.S. Senate. Every candidate received an endorsement of some sort, and a clear favorite never emerged. But by the end of the night, former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson did something he had done many times before — win an election. Final unofficial results from the Associated Press show that Thompson posted a 3 percentage-point victory over his top rival, hedge fund manager and businessman Eric Hovde. Finishing in the second tier were state Assembly Speaker Jeff …

How Brookfield Voted: Thompson Won Narrowly Over Hovde; Novack for Clerk

With 35 percent voter turnout in Brookfield, Patch has the results of how Brookfield residents voted for the U.S. Senate, 13th State Assembly District, Waukesha County Clerk and Waukesha County Register of Deeds.

With voter turnout at 35 percent, Brookfield residents choose former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy G. Thompson, slightly over newcomer Eric Hovde, 30 percent to 27 percent. Statewide, Thompson won the hotly contested Republican primary for the shot to compete for Democratic U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl's seat in Washington. He will compete with Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin for a crucial Senate seat that could swing the balance of control in Washington D.C. In addition to Thompson and Hovde, a hedge fund manager and businessman, voters weighed whether to pick state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald or former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann. With all wards counted, Brookfield residents made these votes: 3,433 votes: Thompson 3,133 votes: Hovde 1,620 votes: …

Herman Cain Stumps for Tommy Thompson at Waukesha Rally

Former presidential candidate says former Wisconsin governor's the best candidate in Wisconsin for U.S. Senate.

Herman Cain, a successful executive and businessman and former Republican candidate in 2012, endorsed former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson for U.S. Senate on Sunday in Waukesha. "Tommy doesn't just talk the talk. He walks the walk," Cain said in a news release. "Tommy's the only candidate who's eliminated an entitlement and revitalized an economy through tax cuts and spending restraint." The rally, held at the Republican Party of Waukesha County’s headquarters on Pearl Street, was overshadowed by the Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan rally in Waukesha. Still, dozens of supporters were on hand to see Thompson and Cain. While Thompson is campaigning for the Republican nomination against businessman Eric Hovde, State Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and …

Ryan Returns to the Badger State

Rep. Paul Ryan - just two days on the campaign trail with Mitt Romney - returned to thousands of supporters in Wisconsin Sunday during a homecoming rally in Waukesha.

There was no question Sunday: Presumptive Republican candidate Mitt Romney energized a Wisconsin conservative voting base by adding Wisconsin native Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate. Bumper-to-bumper traffic snaked along Highway 164 in Pewaukee all the way to the gates of the Waukesha County Expo Center. An estimated 13,000 supporters gathered to get a glimpse of the new Republican duo they hope to send to the White House in November. “What a homecoming for a terrific guy. I guess you think I made the right choice?” Romney asked the crowd – which responded with roars of approval. “I know I did.” Romney announced Ryan would be his running mate Saturday in Virginia, and the pair immediately hit the ground running making two campaign stops …

@Tim -- By 'haters' do you mean the lady who asked Paul Ryan if he planned to do away with Medicare and got hauled away by the police? It's a legitimate questions. Or do you mean the person who asked him about drought relief for the farmers and was told that Ryan just wanted to focus on enjoying the fair? (That reminded me of Martha Stewart and 'focusing' on her salad.)   more ›
