The magazine was at the Spa on Monday taking pictures of owner Tami Gemmell and the Azana family.
Cosmopolitan magazine was at Azana Salon & Spa taking pictures of the Azana family for a feature on domestic violence. The salon will be featured in the May 2013 issue. Days after Azana hairstylist Zina Daniel Haughton obtained a four-year restraining order against the husband she planned to divorce, he stormed into the upscale Azana, killing her and two of her co-workers and wounding four others before killing himself in October. "What a great way to turn such a horrific event into education, way to go!" said Christine Elizabeth Hanson Pruitt on the Azana Facebook page. Zina Haughton's chair and station have been replaced with a small table and chairs in the newly renovated salon, a white candle and a vase that will forever hold three …

Gov. Scott Walker is proposing a law that would monitor domestic abusers with GPS devices.
Zina Daniel’s family believes that GPS monitoring on domestic violence abusers could have saved her life. Days after hairstylist Zina Daniel Haughton obtained a four-year restraining order against her husband she planned to divorce, he stormed into the upscale Azana, killing her and two of her co-workers and wounding four others before killing himself. Elvin Daniel, Zina’s brother, has been pushing for use of a GPS monitoring device that would alert a domestic violence victim when the abuser is nearby or is about to violate the restraining order, reported Patch media partner WISN. Gov. Scott Walker has included the $3 million proposal as part of his budget, which needs to be reviewed by lawmakers.

Nearly six weeks after a mass shooting, fire and sprinkler damage physically ruined Azana Salon & Spa, the shop will reopen Saturday with a renovation that includes tributes to the three women who died.
From chaos to tranquility, damage to repair, old to new. At the foot of Azana Salon & Spa's main doors that Radcliffe Haughton entered and unleashed a deadly mass shooting six weeks ago now lies a granite plaque honoring the three women he killed. In memory of Zina, Cary & Maelyn Oct. 21, 2012 We miss you Those doors will reopen for customers Saturday morning for the first time since the tragedy. Inside the doors, just off to the side, hairstylist Zina Daniel Haughton's chair and station have been replaced with a small table and chairs, a white candle and a vase that will forever hold three yellow roses. Three to represent Zina, Cary Robuck and Maelyn Lind. The same for a trio of white fluffy pillows on the couches. They are subtle touches…

Reopening of spa Saturday will begin the next chapter in the story of the Azana Spa family – the healing.
When Tami Gemmell arrived at Azana Salon and Spa on Oct. 21, the business she has run for 13 years and owned for the past 10, the worst of a nightmarish tragedy was over. Three women were dead, four more seriously wounded, many more left in shock and terror. But that was over. Everybody was out of the building except the killer himself, and police had the area thoroughly surrounded and protected. He could do no more damage. He would soon be found dead by his own hand. Just then, the next, long chapter was beginning. It was about 2:30 p.m., after Gemmell "flew like the wind" from Chicago's O'Hare Airport, where she got the word just as she returned from a 12-day European trip. "My phone just started going off," she said in an interview …

At three years old, the day care children really don't understand what happened to their teacher, Miss Courtney. They just know her leg was hurt but it's getting better and they helped her by doing what they could to help set up a center raffle and auction. The auction — which is open to the public through Monday and features coveted items like a shovel autographed by the "grave digger" former Green Bay Packer Gilbert Brown — is boosting the spirits of Miss Courtney, 22, who was one of the survivors of the Azana Salon & Spa mass shooting. Courtney Felecia Buss, a preschool teacher at All About Learning in Oconomowoc, also worked as a receptionist at Azana. She called the day care center on Monday, Oct. 22 to let them know she was at …

New purple gift cards will be released Dec. 1st, the day Azana Salon & Spa reopens following remodeling.
Azana Salon & Spa's remodeling is progressing and the spa will reopen at 8 a.m. Dec. 1, as employees prepare a special tribute inside the salon for their fallen coworkers. The spa also will start selling on Saturday new purple gift cards, a portion of which will benefit the Azana Victims Fund, owner Tami Gemmell said in a press release Tuesday. The fund proceeds will be distributed equally at year-end to the seven families impacted by the Oct. 21 tragedy — the families of Zina Daniel Haughton, Cary Robuck, Maelyn Lind and the three other spa employees and a customer who were shot and survived. "We're excited to say remodeling plans are on schedule and Dec. 1st is a go for re-opening," Gemmell said. "We hope people will drop by that day to …

The newly opened Culver's of Elm Grove donated more than $14,000 to the Azana Spa Benefit Fund for the families of the women slain in the Oct. 21 mass shooting. Red Oak Counseling also raised funds.
Culver's in Elm Grove is donating more than $14,000 the the Azana Benefit Fund for the families of the three mothers slain in the Oct. 21 spa shooting. The store, which just recently opened around the busy Moorland-Bluemound Road corner from Azana Salon & Spa, held a big event Nov. 8, saying it would donate 100% of all sales from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The community responded in force, with the restaurant's drive-through lane snaking back out onto Bluemound Road and patrons eating quickly to give up their tables to more families. Red Oak Counseling of Elm Grove, led by Roxanne Guenther, also organized a raffle that was held in Culver's Nov. 8, which raised another $1,480 for the spa's benefit fund at Associated Bank. "We want to thank the …

The beauty salon community has rallied around a Brookfield spa struck by a mass shooting in a way rarely, if ever, seen by other industries hurt by workplace violence. More than 115 salons in Wisconsin — plus at least eight other states — stepped up to participate Tuesday in a "Cut It Out" event to raise awareness of domestic violence, the root of the Oct. 21 tragedy at Azana Salon & Spa across from Brookfield Square mall. Days after hairstylist Zina Daniel Haughton obtained a four-year restraining order against her husband she planned to divorce, he stormed into the upscale Azana, killing her and two of her co-workers and wounding four others before killing himself. There's something about the nature of salons — to pamper and care for …

A charity auction was held at 8-Twelve MVP Bar & Grill in Brookfield to benefit the children of the women killed in the Azana Salon & Spa shooting.
Updated Tuesday: Today's TMJ4 says between tickets and the silent auction, 8-twelve's fundraiser raised more than $60,000 for the families of the who died in the Azana spa shooting. ______________________ A packed house at 8-Twelve MVP Bar & Grill in Brookfield Monday night raised $20,000 just in tickets — plus more from rare finds in a silent auction, such as Aaron Rodgers game-worn playoff cleats. And it was all primarily for eight people, namely the children of three mothers slain in the Oct. 21 tragedy at Azana Salon & Spa in Brookfield. Photos of the three women who worked at the spa reminded the 200 who paid $100 a piece to get in just why they were supporting the cause. Candles flickered near the photos and remembrances of Zina …

The newly opened Culver's in Elm Grove — around the corner from Azana Salon & Spa — was hopping Thursday after announcing it will donate 100% of its Thursday sales to the families of women killed in the spa shooting.
At lunch time Thursday, the drive-thru lines for the newly opened Culver's in Elm Grove were so long, cars backed out onto Bluemound Road. And inside the restaurant at dinner time, the place was packed. Why? The community rallied behind Culver's and its generous offer to donate 100% of all sales all day Thursday (10 a.m. to 10 p.m.) to the Azana Salon & Spa benefit fund for the children of the women killed in the spa shooting Oct. 21. Customers tried to eat quickly to give up their tables for more customers. Families waited patiently a few extra minutes as a bolstered staff worked quickly to deliver all orders. And while they waited, they could also buy raffle tickets organized by Red Oak Counseling of Elm Grove, who received a table full …
