Spa Shooting Draws National Condolences, Support

From calls from the president to mayors of Aurora, CO, Tuscon, AZ and more, Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto said the support has been humbling. He commended Azana staff and city police for their "heroic" acts Sunday.

After dispatchers got the first report of a gunman at Azana Salon & Spa, three police squads were there in a minute. "Actually, I believe it was within 40 seconds," Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto said. That quick response — coupled with the bravery of those first responders — likely saved more lives in Sunday's tragedy in which three spa employees died, three more employees and a client were wounded, and perhaps a dozen more escaped or were rescued. "There were police officers who went in and got the injured out when they didn't know the situation with the shooter," Ponto told Patch. "One was critical and they got her out and into an ambulance. Obviously time was of the essence." There were reports that the gunman, Radcliffe Haughton, exited…

UPDATE: Braun/Rodgers' 8-twelve to Raise Funds for Azana

The state MVPs are planning a fund raiser dinner at their Brookfield restaurant.

Saying they wanted to help out a fellow Brookfield business enduring a senseless tragedy, 8-twelve's MVPs are planning a fundraiser for Azana Salon & Spa. The details should be released Monday, but the restaurant owned by the Brewers' Ryan Braun and Packers Aaron Rodgers plans to donate all proceeds of a dinner and silent auction to the salon, Megan Boucher, media coordinator for SURG Restaurants, told Patch. Update: Attendees will pay a per-person charge which will cover their food (via food stations) and drink, with 100 percent of that charge and all silent auction proceeds going to the Azana shooting victims' families, Boucher said. The date and more details on how to attend will be released, possibly on Monday. The estranged husband of…

Racine Teens, Sheriff Raising Funds for Family of Spa Shooting Victim

Friends of Cary Robuck's daughter are putting together a fundraiser, which is now being supported by the Racine County Sheriff's Department. They are hoping the community will show its support.

A number of friends are rallying around Cary Robuck’s family as they cope with her senseless death by holding a fundraiser in her honor. Robuck was the 35-year-old mother of Horlick High School cheerleader Mariah Sturm, and Robuck also was very close with her boyfriend’s daughter Kira Scheffler, who is also a cheerleader. Robuck was killed when Radcliffe Haughton, 45, opened fire Sunday morning at the Azana Salon in Brookfield. Thomas Stark, a senior at Horlick High School who is friends with Mariah and Kira, started planning the fundraiser shortly after the tragedy. Robuck’s family has asked that their friends not speak to the media for now. However, Fiona Murphy said Stark has the support from Robuck’s family to hold the fundraiser. “The…

Just to clarify, the "family support" was expressed via a family member's comments on the event's Facebook page. We respect their privacy at this difficult time and look forward to seeing the community come out in support of them on Friday. Future fundraising in Cary's honor will take place as they decide how best we can help them. Also, not knowing the family personally, I can't speak for what …   more ›

Unprosecuted Police Contacts Preceded Mass Murder

New court testimony shows that Zina Haughton finally had had enough and pressed for domestic abuse related charges and a restraining order, after years of police contacts and no prosecutions. Days later, she and coworkers were dead.

Abused by her husband "on and off" for 20 years, 42-year-old Zina Haughton could endure no more, court records indicate. After failing to press for charges against her husband Radcliffe despite at least a half-dozen police contacts, Haughton recently summoned the courage to tell him she wanted a divorce. And after two back-to-back police incidents within 48 hours — fleeing to a hotel with a bruised face as reported by 620wtmj.com and having her tires slashed at her workplace Azana Salon and Spa, she got even more courageous: she penned a statement publicly accusing her husband of domestic abuse and asked a court for a restraining order barring him from having any contact with her. "I don't want to die, I just don't want to die," Zina …

It's not gun control that's needed it's better abuse arrests. The victim is the wrong person to rely everything on. They are in a bad situation and are probably being threatened if they say something. If a single report happens the police should investigate. If a second comes in, the accused needs to be removed for at least 3 days while an in depth investigation happens. This would include …   more ›

Spa Owner Calls Staff Heroes, Urges Dialogue on Domestic Violence

Speaking publicly for the first time, Azana Salon and Spa owner Tami Gemmell praised her staff and clients, issued a multitude of thanks and said while physical wounds will heal, emotional impacts will linger.

The owner of Azana Salon & Spa paid tribute Tuesday to her three employees who lost their lives in Sunday's spa shooting, thanked the community for its support and urged a dialogue on preventing domestic violence. Her voice trembling with emotion, Tami Gemmell said, "Our hearts are broken over the loss of our colleagues. They were heroic in their actions and protective of each other to the end." She cited Zina Haughton, Cary Robuck and Maelyn Lind by name, stopping to talk about each woman's special talents and personality. One name she did not mention was Radcliffe Haughton, Zina's estranged husband who shot Zina and six others just one day after he bought a gun and three days after a court ordered him to stay away from his wife for four …
