In honor of children heading back to school, McDonald's locations in Brookfield and southeastern Wisconsin are offering oatmeal to students from 6 to 9 a.m. Thursday.
Brookfield's McDonald's locations — and about 120 other McDonald's in southeastern Wisconsin — will be offering free fruit and maple oatmeal to students from 6 to 9 a.m. Thursday to mark the new school year. Customers are asked to either bring a student I.D. or be accompanied by an adult. The oatmeal breakfast is filled with a half cup of fruit including raisins, cranberries and red and green apples. Brookfield McDonald's locations are at: 300 N. Moorland Rd. (across from Brookfield Square mall) and at 18695 W. Bluemound Rd. (near Brookfield Road). It looked like a typical first day of school Tuesday at Brookfield Elementary School — students a little nervous and a little excited as they found their way to their classrooms. But it was a day that was months of preparation in the making: the merger of Hillside Elementary's more than 300 students with their Brookfield Elementary peers, following the Elmbrook School Board's decision to close Hillside at the end of the 2011-12 year. Brookfield Elementary Principal Lynn Raines said the long and detailed transition planning served well. "We were just thrilled at how smoothly the bus dropoff and parent dropoff went, and the support of families and staff in making the transition," Raines said. The passage of Wisconsin's Act 10 has created a "free agent" culture for teachers who are no longer dissuaded from leaving a district and surrendering seniority. The result has been a new competition in education to keep the best and brightest teachers.
Every sports fan has felt that bittersweet moment when their favorite athlete leaves the team they love for a new team offering a sweeter deal. For the athlete, it’s a new and more lucrative opportunity to use their unique skills and talents. In a post-Act 10 educational environment in Wisconsin, the dynamic isn’t much different for educators. Teacher seniority and incremental pay scales have gone out the window and have been replaced by performance-based systems of employment.
