Car fires are not unusual for the Brookfield Fire Department, but this week there was a one with a twist: a motorcycle fire. A 2009 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softtail was fully engulfed in flames when Brookfield fire fighters responded to the scene on the eastbound on-ramp to I-94 at Moorland Road shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday, Fire Department reports said. According to reports: The 64-year-old motorcycle driver said he was turning right to drive up the ramp when he suddenly lost control and dumped the Harley. He smelled gasoline and the motorcycle burst into flames. He was able to get away from the cycle and suffered minor injuries, declining medical attention before a relative picked him up. Firefighters determined the motorcycle likely …

When some 500 Brookfield families attend tonight's National Night Out, they will be greeted by public safety personnel and volunteers wearing purple T-shirts with a unique design. Three Brookfield Central High School students created a winning art design for the T-shirts: showing families walking near houses, with clapsed hands and the message "City of Brookfield Celebration of Crime Prevention and Safety." Students Jessie Bourdow, Jack Cox and Abbie Taylor also were awarded $20 gift certificates from Target for winning the art contest opened to all Central and East High students. The art contest was one of the new features of the 2012 National Night Out, which will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight (Aug. 1) in the Civic Plaza and Public …

Brookfield Fire Chief Charlie Myers asked homeowners to refrain from residential brush burning until the state DNR's fire danger status lowers from its "high" level.
To help prevent brush fires or other property damage, the Brookfield Fire Department is asking residents to withhold from burning brush until fire conditions ease from their current high levels. Fire Chief Charlie Myers sent a release Monday evening saying the state Department of Natural Resources fire danger status is at "HIGH." "This means dangerous conditions for burning," Myers said. "Fires start readily from a match or sparks and spread quickly. It is difficult to control fires in these conditions. Burning is not recommended. "The City of Brookfield Fire Department requests that homeowners not burn until conditions change," the chief said. "Thank you for your assistance in protecting your home and your neighbors." Don't know the city…

Fire fighters were still investigating the cause but warned residents to use extension cords for temporary wiring only and not place cords under carpets or furniture.
A fire caused $100,000 in damage to a deck and home on Tower Hills Drive, but the occupant and a pet dog and monkey escaped without harm. A neighbor called 911 at 3:48 p.m. Thursday and a worker at the neighbor's home notified the occupant there was a fire, Brookfield Fire Chief Charlie Myers said. A Brookfield firefighter suffered and was evaluated for heat exhaustion fighting the blaze in the 1000 block of Tower Hills Drive. The cause was under investigation but believed to be accidential. Myers reminded residents of two things: make sure they have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on all levels of a residence. He added: "Extension cords should only be used for temporary wiring only and should not be placed under carpets or …
