When some 500 Brookfield families attend tonight's National Night Out, they will be greeted by public safety personnel and volunteers wearing purple T-shirts with a unique design. Three Brookfield Central High School students created a winning art design for the T-shirts: showing families walking near houses, with clapsed hands and the message "City of Brookfield Celebration of Crime Prevention and Safety." Students Jessie Bourdow, Jack Cox and Abbie Taylor also were awarded $20 gift certificates from Target for winning the art contest opened to all Central and East High students. The evening ends with a flashlight walk against crime. More than 500 families — or 2,000 to 3,000 people — on average attend the annual event. "We focus on keeping Brookfield a safe place," Carroll said. Kohl's Cares will be there with its "The Great …

A day after storms threatened the annual event in other communities, the weather cooperated for Brookfield as families had fun and learned about safety.
It doesn't get more family friendly than Brookfield's National Night Out where children can tour the fire department, ride CP Rail cars, dunk someone in water, spray a fire hose and much more. Country music band Crossfire provided live entertainment at the event that ended with a flashlight Community Walk Against Crime. But the focus was on providing all kinds of safety and crime prevention tips and information, from booths to handouts to demonstrations.
