Verizon Wireless has received stiff opposition from residents in a neighborhood whose homes abut a proposed site for a 130- to 150-foot cell tower. Neighbors fear for their safety, Verizon planners say they have nowhere else to go.
Despite promises that a new 130-foot cell phone tower would alleviate reception issues in Brookfield, the proposal still received no reception at Monday’s Plan Commission Meeting. A group of six Verizon Wireless planners attempted to allay residents’ concerns about the safety of the tower. However, roughly 10 residents voiced their opposition to the project and asked commissioners, “Can you hear me now?” Verizon is hoping to build a 130-foot monopole adjacent to a water tower at 19295 W. North Avenue, which runs shoulder to shoulder with yards and homes in a residential neighborhood along Alta Vista Circle and Alta Vista Drive. The plans call for construction of the tower, which could expand to 150 feet if other service providers lease …

Restricting size while keeping the limit to the overall number of accessory buildings in any yard at two, the commission felt that greenhouses could 'stand alone'
Brookfield homes have always had the ability to "build on" a greenhouse, but Monday night the structure was given the OK to also roam the backyard on its own. There are already accessory structures permitted in the city, including cabanas, yard maintenance buildings and gazebos, but greenhouses were never a part of that code. The maximum sizes for those buildings are 180 to 200 square feet, depending on the structure. Admittedly, planners say that greenhouses had previously been lumped in under yard maintenance buildings, but as only one per yard is allowed, they felt the need to differentiate the two. Alderman Mark Nelson expressed concern over how many outbuildings would be allowed, arguing that one of each building seemed a lot. The …

While they're as perennial as the products displayed, outdoor displays in front of businesses have never been an allowable use under the current ordinances.
That beautiful hanging basket you get every year in front of Grasch's has never been exactly legal to sell outdoors. The weekend sidewalk sale in front of your favorite clothes store has also been illegal. Seeking to "legitimize such sales by local vendors, including Sendik's and Grasch's," Economic Development Director Dan Ertl explained that the Plan Commission was hoping to lay some legal ground rules to make sure every business seeking to sell items in front of their storefronts were operating on the same page. "We want to make sure that there are certain limits applied, as other businesses are also following suit, like Michaels, which has carts of materials, and it's never really been part of the ordinance," Ertl said. The Plan …

Care center for elderly patients with dementia is proposed on Davidson Road, north of Greenfield Avenue. Neighbors packed City Hall, arguing the residential area is not where the facility should go.
A 100-bed memory care facility won support Monday of city plan commissioners, some of whom tried to allay neighbors concerns about their safety, traffic and quality of life. After listening to more than an hour of public comments from an overflow crowd, commissioners said they had little choice but recommend approval because the plan met all city requirements. Commissioners Kevin Wahlgren and Paul Wartman said they were not thrilled with the proposed residentially zoned site for the care center for dementia and related elderly patients. Others said it meets a community need and would not have a negative impact on surrounding homes. In the end, only Wahlgren voted against. St. Luke's Catholic Church, 18000 W. Greenfield Ave., plans to sell …

The city Plan Commission endorsed Yo Mama!'s plans to convert a drive-thru lane into an outdoor seating area for about 30 patrons.
Just in time for its planned April 5 opening, Yo Mama! frozen yogurt & goodies got the green light last night to build an outdoor patio outside its shop at Brookfield's Ruby Isle shopping center. The city Plan Commission Monday night endorsed an amendment to the center's development agreement to allow for Yo Mama! to remodel the existing drive-thru space (formerly from That Coffee Place) into an outdoor seating area. Aldermen will vote on the request at Tuesday's Common Council meeting. Yo Mama!'s original patio plan included a fireplace, but the owners are considering a water feature instead. The patio will have cement block garden walls with built-in benches and seating for approximately 30 people. If the patio is not built, the drive-…

Brookfield aldermen Tuesday night voted unanimously to schedule a public hearing on a proposed mosque, most likely at a Plan Commission meeting in May. But first, representatives of the city Community Development Department and the Islamic Society of Milwaukee West will hold an informational meeting with neighbors — a practice that is becoming a routine part of city planning processes. The city will invite all property owners within 300 feet of the proposed 12,950-square-foot mosque at 16650 and 16730 W. Pheasant Dr., which is just northeast of the Calhoun Road-North Avenue intersection. The largely vacant site formerly housed Sanders C & Sons Welding. The Islamic Society of Milwaukee wants to build a mosque in Brookfield for its west …

The Islamic Society of Milwaukee wants to build a mosque in Brookfield for its west suburban members, with hopes to eventually expand the facility to serve about 350 congregants. Local Muslim leaders say they have outgrown their Milwaukee location and want to create a more convenient location for Waukesha County area families. The congregation size at the society's 4707 S. 13th St. location has grown from 600 people in 1999 to more than 1,500 on a weekly basis, according to documents filed with the city. About 75 to 100 Muslim families live within a 10-mile radius of the proposed Brookfield mosque site, the documents say. For the past decade, some west-side members have been meeting and praying at various sites in Waukesha County, …

Aldermen will vote Feb. 7 on changes to accommodate Trader Joe's and a yet-unannounced junior anchor store next to Target, after plan commissioners backed the changes.
Changes to smooth the way for Trader Joe's to build in Brookfield have been recommended by the city Plan Commission, City Community Development Director Dan Ertl said. The only sticking point was a request to increase the height of parking lot light poles, he said. Trader Joe's, a specialty grocer known for its private label specialty products and wines, wants to build in Underwood Crossing, a new shopping center under construction at 12821 W. Bluemound Rd. to be anchored by a 140,000-square-foot Target store. Underwood developer Ryan Cos. agreed to investigate whether the three light poles closest to the western Columbia Gardens neighborhood could be at the city's maximum 20-feet height and still create enough light. If not, Ryan said it …

A proposal to build a new Trader Joe's in Brookfield will be back on the agenda Tuesday, as aldermen seek public input on changes sought to a shopping center under construction, in part to accommodate Trader Joe's. Citizens can comment at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 2000 N. Calhoun Rd. The total size of the Underwood Crossing shopping center, being built at 12821 W. Bluemound Rd. on the former site of Quebecor World printing, would increase from 190,100 square feet to 201,601 square feet. The complex would include the existing Bluemound Bowl; a 140,000-square-foot Target store with grocery; a 3,800-square-foot PNC Bank; a junior anchor; and one or two buildings for Trader Joe's and a second retailer or restaurant. Developer Ryan Cos. …

The construction industry may get another shot in the arm, with the Brookfield Plan Commission backing Krause Funeral Home's request to build a 12,500-square-foot fourth location in Brookfield. Commissioners Monday night gave unanimous support to the plan for construction of funeral spaces, a chapel, crematory and banquet hall for post-funeral luncheons and refreshments. Krause, which has two Milwaukee locations and one in New Berlin, would build on four acres at 21600 W. Capitol Dr. near Brookfield's western border with Pewaukee and the Capitol Airport. It's across from the Gateway West Commerce Center. Steve Girard spoke at a public hearing, raising concerns about whether the proposed building height would interfere and pose safety …
