A chance to vote, earn an extra salary and offer public service is here: interested residents can seek election to the Elmbrook School Board, Brookfield Common Council and Town Board.
The chance to offer public service is here. Brookfield and Elm Grove residents have the opportunity to get their names on the April 2 ballots and win election to serve on the Elmbrook School Board, City Council and Town Board. The first step would be going to City Hall, Town Hall or the School District business office to submit a registration form and then interested candidates need to obtain nomination signatures from a sufficient number of electors (voters) in that desired seat's boundaries. If there are more than two candidates for any office, there will be a primary election on Feb. 19. Here are the seats available: Third Aldermanic District (view map): When Ald. Jim Garvens died last February, aldermen appointed Jeff McCarthy to …

The Town of Brookfield would provide a $37 million public financing district to help spur The Corners redevelopment anchored by the state's first Von Maur department store, under a project plan released Thursday. Public reviews of the plan will begin Tuesday, amid the emergence of an anonymous website, "Follow the Money Brookfield," that purports to oppose the financing and seek petition-signers against it. Emails seeking comment sent to the only contact listed on the website (an email address) were not returned. A Joint Review Board, comprised of representatives from the town, Waukesha County, Waukesha County Technical College and school district, will review the plan at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Town Hall, 645 Janacek Rd. And a public hearing…

Plans to open new retail development — including a Von Maur store — pushed back more than a year because of worries about how long it would take to repay town's investment, newspaper reports.
When plans to open a shopping center in the Town of Brookfield that would house Wisconsin's first Von Maur department store were unveiled in March 2011, developers had hoped to start construction that summer — and to be open for business by the 2012 holiday season. Seventeen months later, however, construction on The Corners has yet to begin and officials now say the development, located at Blue Mound Road near Barker Road, probably won't open until November 2014. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Sunday that the much of the delay is due to concerns about how many years it would take the development's property taxes to pay off the town's debt. The Town Board earlier this month approved a timeline for the creation of a financing …

A Town of Brookfield financing district of $30 to $35 million could be ready for approval by the end of the year — a move that would pave the way for spring construction of The Corners development and Wisconsin's first Von Maur department store. Public hearings on the tax incremental financing district plan would be held in October, with votes by the end of November, under a timeline approved by the Town Board Tuesday night. "They'd probably be knocking down some of these buildings possibly in October," Town Administrator Rick Czopp said. The Corners would raze the former Marcus Corp. West Pointe Cinemas and Menards, as well as a strip mall and Applebee's on Blue Mound Road near Barker Road. New construction would include a 140,000-square-…

Though a spring groundbreaking of The Corners / Von Maur project appears unlikely, Town of Brookfield and Marcus Corp. officials say they are making progress on finalizing development and tax financing district agreements. The boundaries of the proposed tax incremental financing (TIF) district, however, remain unresolved, with differing views on whether lands outside of The Corners project should be included or not. Tax base growth on all lands included will fund public improvements to facilitate the redevelopment, such as new roads, sewer and water lines, and an underground parking structure. The Town Board met in closed session Tuesday night with two key representatives of the ambitious open-air, retail-office complex proposed on 19 …

The Town of Brookfield will freeze its tax levy for the third consecutive year at $3,620,382. The freeze — coupled with cuts in the Waukesha and Elmbrook school district tax levies — means town residents likely will see a reduction in their total property tax bill when it's mailed in mid-December. The tax rate for the town portion of residents' tax bill is estimated to drop a penny to $3.56 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The town is waiting for its final manufacturing tax base figure from the state before it can finalize the rate. "We're very optimistic for the future," Town Administrator Rick Czopp said. "I don't see gloom and doom. We constantly say bigger is not better. We're smaller, we're nimble." The Town Board unanimously …

I'm as concerned about the taxpayers taking on the debt and subsidizing business as much as you are. But when someone tries very hard to talk me out of doing something and has shown other views that are against the long-term welfare of the Town (the incorporation, referring to it as 'stealing' land from the Town of Waukesha) it makes me very suspicious. Is someone perhaps hoping that the …   more ›
