Forget about the passing of the baton. At Burleigh, it's all about the passing of the shoes. Burleigh Viking, purple and gold shoes. Bil Zahn, retiring as Burleigh's principal after 22 years, presented his successor Teresa Curley with his size 11.5 Nikes. Laughing as she said her 6.5-size feet couldn't fit in the iconic shoes, Curley promised to keep them on display at the school. Students welcomed Curley, who was hired from a Wilmont-Trevor grade school in Kenosha County, with applause, questions, gifts, song and dance during an all-school assembly Monday morning. The "hello" to Curley came after a "farewell" sendoff to Zahn at another assembly and cookout Friday. The kindergarteners through fifth graders sang "Welcome to Burleigh" and …

Retiring after 22 years as Burleigh Elementary School principal, Bil Zahn and his legacy were celebrated Friday, first with an all-school ceremony unveiling the new school monument sign, and later, a cookout.
In his first year as Burleigh Elementary School's principal, Bil Zahn hired Missy Petersdorf as his secretary. "He has good taste," she quips. That was 1990. In the 22 years since, Zahn has attended Petersdorf's wedding, witnessed her daughter enroll and "graduate" from Burleigh and spent countless hours together. "We're good friends," she said. That's how many people felt who attended Zahn's retirement open house / cookout after school Friday. "I don't think I could think of a person better suited to be an elementary grade school principal," said Santo Mirasola, who supervises the school playground at lunch recesses. "He loves the kids, and they love him," Mirasola said. Petersdorf said Zahn knows how to discern people's talents and then …

The 2011-12 Burleigh Elementary School DARE graduates
Wednesday, March 28, 2012
Teresa Curley, a principal in the Trevor-Wilmot Consolidated Grade School District, will succeed Bil Zahn as principal of Burleigh this summer.
Burleigh Elementary School Principal Bil Zahn will be a tough act to follow, supporters say, but an elementary school principal in southern Wisconsin says she will throw her heart into it. The Elmbrook School Board Tuesday approved a two-year contract with Teresa Curley to succeed Zahn who is retiring June 30 after 27 years at Elmbrook. Board member Meg Wartman said while a district team was recruiting, it frequently heard that Zahn's shoes would be hard to fill. "I'm not sure she'll ever grow into those shoes," Wartman joked. But she said Curley, who was the unanimous choice by team members, has the "same heart for children." The district interviewed 10 candidates, three of whom were called in for second interviews and Curley "rose to the…

The opera company delivered a fun, interactive program on rhythm, tempo and other musical concepts as part of the Fine Arts at Burleigh (FAB) program.
With their week of standardized tests completed, Burleigh Elementary School’s five classes of second graders headed to the band room Friday afternoon for a special performance. As a part of the school’s Fine Arts at Burleigh (FAB) program, each grade enjoys a yearly visit from a “cultural partner” from the community. Skylight Opera Theatre, based in Milwaukee, came to entertain the second graders for 45 minutes of singing, dancing and teaching. Katie Bart, Burleigh’s general music director, organizes FAB activities and invited Skylight to come. “We already have orchestra, band and chorus for fourth and fifth grade, but the FAB program is more enrichment for K through 5,” she says. But Burleigh’s fine arts program is an exception to most …

Hi Pat, I just heard the unfortunate news about the loss of Santo from Ron Woolsey, Rich Anderson & Gary Blaschke yesterday at softball practice (on March 15, 2013). I am still shocked and he will be missed at Brookfield East! I always remember in the past getting ready for football on a cold night and there he is with his little stool in front of the gate. I also remember going past the ticket …   more ›
