Extra effort and resources will focus on both drunken driving and speeding as police seek to protect those out to enjoy the beginning of summer.
The High Visibility Enforcement OWI Task Force will be out this holiday weekend, with most metro area agencies deploying additional officers all weekend long for Memorial Day. Brookfield will be no exception. In fact, as usual the Brookfield Police Department takes a leading role in Task Force deployments. "The message is the same, and it really is rather simple," said Brookfield PD Capt. Phil Horter, the Task Force media and public relations coordinator for the whole region. "Do not drink and drive, because law enforcement will be out in force. "Our goal is certainly to deter, but if we can not deter, we will detect, and if necessary, detain." "We would also like to remind motorists that as the weather improves, they should expect and …
Brookfield man takes off at high speed hoping to elude patrol officer, but instead he multiplies his trouble.
A Brookfield man with around 2½ times the legal level of alcohol in his bloodstream tried to outrace a squad car rather than take a municipal ticket for first-offense drunken driving, according to a criminal complaint. As a result, Daniel P. Lonski, 23, is facing a criminal felony charge, as well as an OWI citation, for fleeing from an officer. If convicted, he would be looking at a sentence of up to three years and six months in prison. On the night of March 24, Lonski was spotted by a patrol officer driving an estimated 80 to 90 mph northbound on Brookfield Road. The officer turned off Bennington Drive to follow, hitting his emergency lights. Lonski slowed to 30 or 40 mph as he approached Gebhardt Road, the officer said, but then gunned …

Driving west into Brookfield from Tosa, resident says she was on her way to Milwaukee – and, by the way, was dropping off her car for some work, but then again... maybe not.
It may be human nature to concoct a little story in your defense when confronted with a little blame. But when you're over 2½ times the legal alcohol limit, it can be hard to make the threads of deception hang together. As in the case of this driver. At 1:50 a.m. Monday, a 47-year-old Brookfield woman was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, first offense, after she reacted rather suspiciously to just the sight of a Brookfield patrol officer. She and the officer crossed paths at Capitol Drive and 124th Street, where she was going west on Capitol and he was going north on 124th but about to turn the same way onto Capitol. Both stopped at the light in sight of one another. The officer said the woman got the green light first and …

Pewaukee woman talks faster than she can think, and it's little wonder with the cocktail of illegal substances she admits she's been imbibing before driving.
A Pewaukee woman showed a little confusion about how much she'd had to drink after a traffic stop April 28, suggesting that however much it was, it was "not enough." Later, she admitted she had more than one reason for her difficulties. At 2:52 a.m., the woman, 55, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, first offense, after a traffic stop at West Capitol Drive and North Brookfield Road. A patrol officer going west on Capitol Drive at Calhoun Road saw her speeding toward him, turned around and paced her. He said she was going about 10 mph over the limit and was also changing lanes repeatedly, without signaling and for no apparent reason. When he pulled her over and walked up to her car, he first noted that she was speaking "extremely…

Milwaukee man had a .18 percent blood alcohol concentration and faces 14-1/2 years in prison if convicted of two felonies, according to the complaint.
A 46-year-old Milwaukee man faces his seventh drunken driving charge after taking his daughter’s vehicle and driving erratically near Brookfield Square Mall, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday. Mark Stojanovic faces up to 14-1/2 years initial confinement in prison and $35,000 in fines if convicted of operating while intoxicated-seventh offense and operating a vehicle with an owner’s consent. He remains jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail. Stojanovic was pulled over after a citizen called police April 8 after she saw his vehicle swerving near the mall. Later, she told police, he appeared to fall asleep but eventually continued driving and swerving, nearly hitting a mailbox and weaving toward a mother and her daughter who were …

Dennis J. Haase, 63, was pulled after driving slow and nearly hitting a Brookfield police officer.
A Wauwatosa man who was arrested in Brookfield in 2011 for his fifth drunken driving offense will spend 14 months in prison. Dennis J. Haase, 63, was pulled over by the Brookfield Police Department on Oct. 19, 2011, after he was driving too slow and nearly hit a police officer while changing lanes. He had a .149 percent blood alcohol concentration at the time of his arrest. Waukesha County Judge Patrick Haughney also sentenced Haase on Friday to three years of extended supervision following his prison sentenced. Haase’s driver’s license was revoked for three years. After being pulled over and asked how much he had to drink, Haase told the officer “not much” but was unable to pass field sobriety tests. He was convicted of OWI in 1991, 2000…

Luckily, a Brookfield Police officer is near at hand when a caller reports a driver who was a clear threat to himself and others.
A frightened caller alerted Brookfield Police to a dangerously reckless driver on a busy thoroughfare, and a nearby patrol officer was able to stop him before he could do any damage. He would prove to be a twice-convicted drunk driver, now on his third time through the system. According to Brookfield police: At 9:11 p.m. March 22, the 35-year-old Waukesha man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, third offense, after an anxious caller told police he was speeding, swerving wildly and repeatedly cutting off other drivers. She reported him southbound on North 124th Street at West Capitol Drive. Fortunately, a Brookfield patrol officer was not far away and spotted the suspect's car just as he passed Burleigh Street. The officer said …

Also, a Brookfield man is arrested for his first OWI in Wauwatosa with a whopping .28 blood alcohol level and a missing tire.
Full reports aren't in yet, but the Brookfield Police Department made three arrests for suspicion of drunken driving during a major deployment of force over St. Patrick's Day weekend, a department spokeman said. Among those from Brookfield was at one driver who tipped the Breathalyzer scale with a .28 blood alcohol concentration in Wauwatosa. Brookfield police, participating with many metro area municipal police departments plus the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department and the State Patrol in the regional OWI Task Force, made 52 stops, handing out 13 citations and 42 warnings Saturday and Sunday. Metro-wide, there were 49 OWI arrests among 574 stops, with 423 citations doled out and 205 warnings issued. Law enforcement officers …

Stopped by Wauwatosa police, driver acknowledges he'd been drinking some beer, but at first fails to note that it was double-strength brew.
A Brookfield man made no bones about his ability to drive safely and legally after being stopped by Wauwatosa police Wednesday night. He said he'd had only four beers, but then admitted they were really strong beers. At 11:54 p.m., the 29-year-old was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, first offense, after a Tosa patrol officer saw him stop and then go through a solid red light on North 68th Street at Blue Mound Road. The officer followed him onto I-94 and saw him swerving out of his lane, and pulled him over on the 84th Street off-ramp. The driver admitted drinking four beers much earlier with some friends. But he performed poorly on sobriety tests, and then when asked again how much he’d been drinking, he again said he’d had four …

Abusive, threatening and profane behavior to strangers is part of an episode that lands a man his fourth OWI charge in five years, a felony.
A 50-year-old Brookfield man has been charged for his fourth time with drunken driving after reckless and dangerous incidents on a recent afternoon near a school bus stop. His abusive and threatening behavior toward several citizens led to additional charges. Kevin P. McMullen was charged Monday in Waukesha County Circuit Court with his fourth OWI within five years, making it a felony count, and with disorderly conduct and driving under revocation. If convicted on the operating while intoxicated charge alone, he would face up to six years in prison. According to the criminal complaint: The incident began Friday afternoon when McMullen pounded on the door of a home in the 500 block of Green Meadow Drive. A 15-year-old girl answered the door…
