UPDATED: Pewaukee Schools Official a Finalist for Elmbrook Superintendent

Mark Hansen, chief academic officer in the Pewaukee School District and former Waukesha assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, is the only finalist for job.

UPDATED (4:11 p.m.) Mark Hansen, chief academic officer in the Pewaukee School District and former Waukesha assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, is the lone finalist for the Elmbrook superintendent job. After receiving an applicant pool of 47, the Elmbrook School Board interviewed six candidates last week and narrowed to two finalists. One of those finalists, however, then withdrew from consideration. The district will move forward with the same process it had planned to do with two finalists. Hansen will tour two schools, meet with district staff and interview again with the School Board on Thursday. Hansen, a former teacher who is pursuing his doctorate, also has been principal of Waukesha South High School, assistant…

A Head Hunter Company is paid a fee to do a national search. They find an inexperienced candidate in the district next door and it looks like there are problems with him in other districts. The Board of Education sure seems like they know what they are doing don't they? Read the article. Gibson expressed doubts.   more ›

Elmbrook Graduation in Church Case Goes to Full Appellate Court

The full federal appellate court will hear arguments Thursday in the lawsuit filed against Elmbrook by the Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

A full federal appeals court will hear arguments Thursday on whether the Elmbrook School District violated any laws when it formerly held its graduation ceremonies in a church. The full 10-member U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit based in Chicago agreed to hear the case in November. The full court vacated a three-member panel's 2-1 ruling that Elmbrook could hold its graduation ceremonies in a church. Elmbrook said for comfort and space it held its graduation ceremonies for years at Elmbrook Church, a nondemoninational Christian in the Town of Brookfield. Superintendent Matt Gibson asked the church to cover its large cross in the sanctuary above the graduation stage but the church refused and there were other religious symbols and …

Assistant Elmbrook Superintendent Resigns, Another Retires

Turnover in the Elmbrook School District administrative team continues, post Act 10 and as Superintendent Matt Gibson retires in June.

Much like the record number of Elmbrook teacher retirements last year, the turnover in Elmbrook administrators continues with one of the district's two assistant superintendents resigning and a director retiring. The two departures come on the heels of: Depka led Elmbrook's educational services division for the past five years, longer than her three predecessors who served from one to three years, Gibson said. He applauded her work, as well as that of Stavros, who despite retirement said she plans to continue to serve special education students in some fashion in the future. The School Board this week approved both departures, with several board members taking time to thank both women for their dedication to Elmbrook's success. Board …

Your tag line to the story implies that the passage of Act 10 had something to do with the two assistant superintendents departure. Yet there's nothing in the story that mentions that as a reason. The more likely reason would be the resignation of the superintendent himself. I'd call that somewhat shoddy journalism.   more ›

Two Elmbrook Elementary Principals Retiring

Burleigh's Bil Zahn and Hillside's Julie Kremer will retire at year-end, as will two veteran psychologist and social workers.

As the final school bell rings in June for Hillside Elementary School, its principal Julie Kremer also will be saying goodbye. Kremer announced she is retiring in June after 18 years with Elmbrook School District (34 years in education), and she's not the only elementary school principal doing so. Bil Zahn at Burleigh Elementary also announced he will retire after 27 years at Elmbrook. While Zahn's position will be replaced, Kremer's will not. The School Board voted in October to close Hillside and transition from six elementary schools to five, with Hillside's resident students moving en masse to Brookfield Elementary, led by Principal Lynn Raines. "I am proud to have been a part of this profession," Kremer wrote in her retirement letter…
