Multiple fire departments helped battle a residential fire that started in the sunroom of a home on Elm Grove Road in Brookfield.
Brookfield firefighters quickly extinguished a blaze that started in the sunroom of a home on Elm Grove Road. Fire Chief Charlie Myers said first responders spotted flames and smoke coming from the rear of the home when they arrived on the scene. The home was at 530 South Elm Grove Road. The fire was in the city's mutual response area, and New Berlin firefighters arrived on the scene first. "First police officer arrived on scene saw heavy smoke," Myers said. "Our comapnies arrived on scene along with New Berlin and made an aggresive fire attack on the rear of the building. We extinguished the fire rapidly." It was gut-check time for two Mandel Group apartment workers on Sept. 11 and the duo acted quickly and courageously, a fire chief said. Not only did they run into a Brookfield apartment building after smelling smoke and seeing flames shooting out the garage, but they pulled an elderly couple to safety and went back in to save their pet dog and birds, Brookfield Deputy Fire Chief Brian Gerner said. Brookfield firefighters helped put out a grill fire outside a home in the 2400 block of Coach House Drive about 4:30 p.m. Friday. The homeowner was trying to knock the flames down with a garden hose, fire officials said Monday. Fire Chief Charlie Myers urged residents to turn off not only the grill but also the gas supply — either at the propane tank or the gas outlet from the house.

UPDATE (2:30 p.m. Monday): A fire caused an estimated $300,000 in damage to a Phoenix Avenue home, after flames spread through the attic and roof, fire officials said Monday. When the first Brookfield fire crews arrived and saw the extent of the flames in the roof, they struck a second alarm withthe MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System). Crews came to assist from the Town of Brookfield, Elm Grove, Wauwatosa, Butler, Pewaukee, West Allis, New Berlin, Menomonee Falls, Lisbon, City of Waukesha and Sussex. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday. The Brookfield homeowners were being helped by the Red Cross. "The home did have an accepted offer, with the sale scheduled for closing on today's date," Elm Grove Police Chief James Gage said in an news release. "All evidence at the scene, along with all information gained through interviews of the homeowners, their agents, and the prospective buyers, and their agents, indicates that the home was vacant and that no one was in the residence," Gage said. A garage fire that spread to a house attic caused $93,500 in damage Sunday evening, fire officials said. Crews were able to control the fire at 1230 Indianwood Dr. within 15 minutes of the 6:20 p.m. fire call. The cause of the fire, which started in the garage, is unknown but is not suspicious, Fire Chief Charlie Myers said Monday. Updated (2:25 p.m. with Fox6now.com report): A fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to a Pershing Drive home Saturday night, but person inside was able to get out safely. It was not yet known exactly what caused the fire but it has been determined to be accidental, according to the Brookfield Fire Department. A city plow truck was on fire early Saturday morning inside the Brookfield highway garage, setting off a sprinkler system that alerted firefighters. The sprinklers and fire crews contained the fire and damage was estimated at $75,000, according to Fire Chief Charlie Myers. The cause was yet undetermined but not believed to be suspicious. According to the fire department: Firefighters got a water flow alarm at 1:37 a.m. Saturday at the highway garage, 19700 Riverview Dr. But the first units saw fire inside the building and found a plow truck on fire inside. Crews from three fire engines and three paramedic units put out the fire with about 400 gallons of water. No one was injured.
