None of the U.S. elected officials from Wisconsin particularly cared for the deal hammered out to avoid the "fiscal cliff" — and that includes those who voted for it.
The "fiscal cliff" was averted Tuesday when the U.S. House handily passed a bill approved a day earlier in the U.S. Senate that raised taxes on the wealthy and staved off a tax increase for the middle-class. The bill passed 257-167 in the House, a comfortable 40 votes more than what was needed to become law. Among the congressmen serving southeastern Wisconsin, U.S. Reps. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI 5th District) and Tom Petri (R-WI 6th District) voted "no" on the measure, while U.S. Reps. Paul Ryan (R- WI 1st District) and Gwen Moore (D- WI 4th District) cast "yes" votes. U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI 7th District), who now serves the Hudson area, voted no. The candidates agreed to square off once in Wausau and twice in Milwaukee over the next six weeks.
Tommy Thompson and Tammy Baldwin have agreed to three televised debates prior to the Nov. 6 general election for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Herb Kohl. Two debates will be in Milwaukee and one in Wausau: "We need a new direction for our country, a direction that leaves our country in better shape for our children and grandchildren," said Thompson, the former governor and GOP nominee, in a press release Monday. Among Wisconsin's influential conservatives, Jeff Fitzgerald now has plurality support over Tommy Thompson, Eric Hovde and Mark Neumann, but they still see Thompson as their best bet for defeating Democratic candidate Tammy Baldwin in November.
In the primary season, a lot can change in a month. A recent Patch survey of influential Wisconsin conservatives proved just that. A plurality of Wisconsin Republican insiders now favor Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald for their party's U.S. Senate nominee, according to the unscientific survey. Fitzgerald has generally polled behind former Gov. Tommy Thompson and businessmen Mark Neumann and Eric Hovde throughout the race. In 1988, the Bradley Center opened, a sparkling new venue for the basketball team owned by Herb Kohl, who celebrated that year by taking office as a U.S. Senator. The arena and Kohl’s service followed parallel paths; both are up for replacement. The Democrat announced that he would not seek a fifth term, sparking a furious effort by member of the GOP to earn the nomination in a general election. Against four Democratic challengers in a recall election, Gov. Scott Walker leads by anywhere from 6 to 10 percentage points, according to a new poll released this week. The first in a series of polls by the Marquette University Law School asked registered voters whom they would vote for in head-to-head matchups between the challengers and Walker. Democratic Party of Wisconsin says to plan on a primary to vet candidates, and tap a contender.
One large question looming over Wisconsin politics was answered Tuesday with more than 1 million petition signatures submitted to the state in the recall effort against Gov. Scott Walker, but it left another question unanswered: Who would challenge the governor should a recall election happen? Speaker of Wisconsin Assembly will run against Thompson, Neumann for Republican nomination.
State Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald officially announced Tuesday that he will run for the U.S. Senate in November 2012. The Republican from Horicon is perhaps best known for his role in the controversial legislation curbing collective-bargainning rights. He told the Associated Press that was his biggest asset in the race. Other Republicans who have announced their intention to run are former Gov. Tommy Thompson and former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann. Two others, state Sen. Frank Lasee and Madison investor Eric Hovde, are also considering a run, the AP reported. U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin has entered the race on the Democratic side. The candidates are battling to replace U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl, who announced in May that he will retire.

Patriot's post was unclear when he spoke about the large percentage who don't pay a single dime in federal income tax and then went on to speak about people on the dole although they could work. He failed to acknowledge the group of working people who because of low income and the use of tax deductions, exemptions and credit end up owing no federal income tax yet are taking no government aid. … more ›
