Wisconsin Lawmakers Not Thrilled with Bill That Averted Fiscal Cliff

None of the U.S. elected officials from Wisconsin particularly cared for the deal hammered out to avoid the "fiscal cliff" — and that includes those who voted for it.

The "fiscal cliff" was averted Tuesday when the U.S. House handily passed a bill approved a day earlier in the U.S. Senate that raised taxes on the wealthy and staved off a tax increase for the middle-class. The bill passed 257-167 in the House, a comfortable 40 votes more than what was needed to become law. Among the congressmen serving southeastern Wisconsin, U.S. Reps. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI 5th District) and Tom Petri (R-WI 6th District) voted "no" on the measure, while U.S. Reps. Paul Ryan (R- WI 1st District) and Gwen Moore (D- WI 4th District) cast "yes" votes. U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI 7th District), who now serves the Hudson area, voted no. The U.S. Senate passed the bill 89-8 on Monday with Republican Ron Johnson and Democrat …

Patriot's post was unclear when he spoke about the large percentage who don't pay a single dime in federal income tax and then went on to speak about people on the dole although they could work. He failed to acknowledge the group of working people who because of low income and the use of tax deductions, exemptions and credit end up owing no federal income tax yet are taking no government aid. …   more ›

Tommy Thompson, Tammy Baldwin Confirm 3 U.S. Senate Debates

The candidates agreed to square off once in Wausau and twice in Milwaukee over the next six weeks.

Tommy Thompson and Tammy Baldwin have agreed to three televised debates prior to the Nov. 6 general election for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Herb Kohl. Two debates will be in Milwaukee and one in Wausau: "We need a new direction for our country, a direction that leaves our country in better shape for our children and grandchildren," said Thompson, the former governor and GOP nominee, in a press release Monday. "Voters deserve to hear my opponent defend the record $16 trillion in debt driven by out-of-control government spending." Baldwin, a U.S. Representative, aims to keep the seat for the Democrats as the GOP tries to gain control of the Senate with an eye on repealing the Affordable Health Care Act. She agreed to three debates…

@Bren - That's because you didn't watch the debate - instead, you were watching Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow, and Lawrence O'Donnell! Even the uber-liberal SanFrancisco Gate said this about Baldwin: "Baldwin, in contrast, has served seven relatively low-profile terms in the U.S. House." Confirming Tommy's charge that: "When you don't have a record, you attack the other person," the former Wisconsin …   more ›

Fitzgerald Now Top Choice of GOP Insiders, Thompson Still Best to Beat Baldwin

Among Wisconsin's influential conservatives, Jeff Fitzgerald now has plurality support over Tommy Thompson, Eric Hovde and Mark Neumann, but they still see Thompson as their best bet for defeating Democratic candidate Tammy Baldwin in November.

In the primary season, a lot can change in a month. A recent Patch survey of influential Wisconsin conservatives proved just that. A plurality of Wisconsin Republican insiders now favor Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald for their party's U.S. Senate nominee, according to the unscientific survey. Fitzgerald has generally polled behind former Gov. Tommy Thompson and businessmen Mark Neumann and Eric Hovde throughout the race. In fact, a similar Patch survey in mid-July of the same political insiders showed Hovde as the favorite with Thompson close behind and Fitzgerald trailing at 10 percent, a spread that mirrored most representative polling data. Thursday's survey, which asked for whom the 53 respondents would vote if the election were held…

Senate Showdown: Wisconsin GOP Primary Looks Too Close to Call

Former Gov. Tommy Thompson and businessman Eric Hovde appear to be frontrunners, but many voters still undecided - which could help candidates Mark Neumann and Jeff Fitzgerald.

When conservative voters went to the polls in Wisconsin’s recent recall elections, their choice for candidates was pretty clear. Tuesday’s U.S. Senate Republican primary, however, poses a difficult decision for voters — and a clear favorite is far from evident. Hedge fund manager and businessman Eric Hovde; former Gov. Tommy Thompson; state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald; and former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann will face each other in the statewide primary. The winner will advance to take on Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin in the Nov. 6 election for the seat left vacant by the retirement of Democrat Herb Kohl. Gov. Scott Walker, who has said he will remain neutral in the primary, said the quartet of candidates have combined to offer voters …

POLL: Who Has Your Vote in the GOP Primary for U.S. Senate?

Previous polls suggest former governor Tommy Thompson is in the lead, but the key Tea Party endorsement went to Mark Neumann and businessman Eric Hovde is liked by Patch's GOP insiders.

In 1988, the Bradley Center opened, a sparkling new venue for the basketball team owned by Herb Kohl, who celebrated that year by taking office as a U.S. Senator. The arena and Kohl’s service followed parallel paths; both are up for replacement. The Democrat announced that he would not seek a fifth term, sparking a furious effort by member of the GOP to earn the nomination in a general election. Tuesday’s primary election will select that nominee from among Tommy Thompson, Mark Neumann, Eric Hovde and Jeff Fitzgerald. And unlike many primaries, it’s tough to say today who will come out on top. Thompson, the former governor, topped the latest Marquette University poll but plenty of voters continued to call themselves undecided. Our own …

Fitz is a great candidate and he still has a chance. Really, they're all fantastic choices, making it a very tough decision, but the decision in November will be an easy one - ABB - anybody but Barack and anybody but Baldwin!   more ›

Poll: Walker Would Win in a Recall Race; Thompson Frontrunner in Challenge for U.S. Senate Seat

In head-to-head matchups, Walker leads four Democratic challengers by 6 to 10 percentage points.

Against four Democratic challengers in a recall election, Gov. Scott Walker leads by anywhere from 6 to 10 percentage points, according to a new poll released this week. The first in a series of polls by the Marquette University Law School asked registered voters whom they would vote for in head-to-head matchups between the challengers and Walker.  The poll found that, in the hypothetical matchups with possible Democratic candidates to challenge in a recall election, Walker: The poll comes on the heels of recall organizers submitting 1 million petition signatures to the state Government Accountability Board, the agency that oversees elections, along with 450,000 signatures against Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and another 80,000 in efforts …

Who's Going to Challenge Walker in Potential Recall Election?

Democratic Party of Wisconsin says to plan on a primary to vet candidates, and tap a contender.

One large question looming over Wisconsin politics was answered Tuesday with more than 1 million petition signatures submitted to the state in the recall effort against Gov. Scott Walker, but it left another question unanswered: Who would challenge the governor should a recall election happen?  With no candidates giving the official nod and media reports speculating over a very long list of candidates, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chairman Mike Tate said at a press conference Tuesday that his party is leaning toward holding a primary. "You'll have candidates traveling across the state for six or plus weeks," Tate said. "I think it will be a positive campaign focused on Scott Walker's failures." The Government Accountability Board — the …

Fitzgerald Will Run For U.S. Senate

Speaker of Wisconsin Assembly will run against Thompson, Neumann for Republican nomination.

State Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald officially announced Tuesday that he will run for the U.S. Senate in November 2012. The Republican from Horicon is perhaps best known for his role in the controversial legislation curbing collective-bargainning rights. He told the Associated Press that was his biggest asset in the race. Other Republicans who have announced their intention to run are former Gov. Tommy Thompson and former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann. Two others, state Sen. Frank Lasee and Madison investor Eric Hovde, are also considering a run, the AP reported. U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin has entered the race on the Democratic side. The candidates are battling to replace U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl, who announced in May that he will retire.
