I need to look at the total package, salary and benefits. I'd like to compare it to Gibson's total package. I think it's fair to ask why someone with less experience as a superintendent would come in higher than one leaving after 17 years. I know the market comes into play and what other sups are being paid.....   more ›

Elmbrook Makes an Offer to Superintendent Candidate

If accepted, the contact offer to Pewaukee Schools administrator Mark Hansen will be on the Elmbrook School Board agenda Tuesday for approval.

A Pewaukee School District administrator Wednesday was reviewing a proposed contract offer to become Elmbrook's next superintendent. The Elmbrook School Board met in closed session Monday night to discuss the terms of the contract offer — such as salary and benefits — to the sole finalist for the job, Mark Hansen. Keith Brightman, Elmbrook's assistant superintendent for finance, operations and human resources, said in an e-mail Wednesday that the board reviewed a draft contract, revisited salary and compensation comparable data, and set board contract authority.  Brightman said he and School Board President Tom Gehl presented the contract to Hansen Tuesday night and was awaiting his response Wednesday. Brightman would not comment on the …

Hansen also met Thursday with staff as he spent an hour each at Brookfield East High and Dixon Elementary schools. The board plans to hold another closed session at 6 p.m. Monday at the district administrative offices, 13780 Hope St., to discuss "authorizing contract/salary/benefit parameters for the finalist candidate." UPDATED: Pewaukee Schools Official a Finalist for Elmbrook Superintendent

Mark Hansen, chief academic officer in the Pewaukee School District and former Waukesha assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, is the only finalist for job.

UPDATED (4:11 p.m.) Mark Hansen, chief academic officer in the Pewaukee School District and former Waukesha assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, is the lone finalist for the Elmbrook superintendent job. After receiving an applicant pool of 47, the Elmbrook School Board interviewed six candidates last week and narrowed to two finalists. One of those finalists, however, then withdrew from consideration. The district will move forward with the same process it had planned to do with two finalists. Hansen will tour two schools, meet with district staff and interview again with the School Board on Thursday. Hansen, a former teacher who is pursuing his doctorate, also has been principal of Waukesha South High School, assistant…

A Head Hunter Company is paid a fee to do a national search. They find an inexperienced candidate in the district next door and it looks like there are problems with him in other districts. The Board of Education sure seems like they know what they are doing don't they? Read the article. Gibson expressed doubts.   more ›

Elmbrook Hires Iowa Firm in Superintendent Search

The School Board agrees to spend up to $20,900 to a consultant to help search for Superintendent Matt Gibson's successor.

The Elmbrook School Board has agreed to pay an Iowa firm up to $20,900 to search for a new superintendent to success Matt Gibson when he retires in June. After interviewing about a half-dozen search firms, the board chose Ray & Associates of Cedar Rapids, IA, opting for a national rather than local firm to widen the search out of state. Gibson was hired as Elmbrook's superintendent in 1995, transferring from the top schools job in Stoughton outside of Madison. Prior to Stoughton, Gibson was superintendent in three Milwaukee suburban high school feeder districts (Swallow, North Lake and Fox Point-Bayside). Prior to that, Gibson had been a music teacher and school principal. Elmbrook officials hope to have a superintendent candidate selected…

And there are also many of us in the community who are dissatisfied with the decision to stop short of a fully curative goal. It appears that we still have one school too many. and that problem is not going to go away soon. Just going to have to go through the entire 'labor and delivery' once again later! And in the interim we will continue over spending rather than paying existing debt.   more ›

Is Walker to Blame for Likely School Closing in Brookfield?

State Democrats say governor's budget cuts is the reason Elmbrook is shutting down school, but superintendent says that's just one factor.

The school-closing debate in Brookfield took a political turn this week when the state Democratic Party cited the likely closure of Hillside Elementary School as an example of how Gov. Scott Walker's state budget is hurting education across Wisconsin. What has pretty much been a local issue caught the eye of state Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate, who used the potential school closing to continue the  argument that Walker’s actions have been harmful to students. "Scott Walker claims he gave local governments and school districts the 'tools' to deal with his budget cuts, but it looks the only tool they got was the ax," the PoliticScoop blog quoted Tate as saying Wednesday. The focus of the dispute are provisions in the state's new …

I share the same frustration that Dave does. Had Walker simply given schools the “tools” they needed to help balance their budgets (by balancing it on the backs of the school staff), schools would be in good shape. Unfortunately, he didn’t stop there. The $3.8 million savings from the “tools” would have left the district in good shape. However, the $6 million loss in revenue put the district back…   more ›
