The headline is from a for profit news web site. It's not a government publication and certainly not a religious one. Its reason for being is to make a profit. If that means the use of creative new terms to avoid offending someone and keeping them in their customer base, then they'll do it. This whole notion of starting a public food fight (anonymously, I notice) over a choice of words is the …   more ›

Spa Shooting Draws National Condolences, Support

From calls from the president to mayors of Aurora, CO, Tuscon, AZ and more, Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto said the support has been humbling. He commended Azana staff and city police for their "heroic" acts Sunday.

After dispatchers got the first report of a gunman at Azana Salon & Spa, three police squads were there in a minute. "Actually, I believe it was within 40 seconds," Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto said. That quick response — coupled with the bravery of those first responders — likely saved more lives in Sunday's tragedy in which three spa employees died, three more employees and a client were wounded, and perhaps a dozen more escaped or were rescued. "There were police officers who went in and got the injured out when they didn't know the situation with the shooter," Ponto told Patch. "One was critical and they got her out and into an ambulance. Obviously time was of the essence." There were reports that the gunman, Radcliffe Haughton, exited…

The new Aaron Rodgers-Ryan Braun restaurant, 8-twelve MVP Bar & Grill, held a private big bash Sunday night to celebrate its grand opening in the Town of Brookfield. Among those in the packed crowd: the two MVPs, Surg Restaurant Group owner Omar Shaik, Gov. Scott Walker and his wife and sons, Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto and Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas. The Business Journal was there and snapped these shots. Ponto, who attended with his wife Mary, said the party was packed and the restaurant was a great experience. So what does he recommend? The calamari and prime rib, paired with red wine, were "excellent," he said. Were you there Sunday evening? Share your photos! And if you've been to 8-twelve since it opened July 5 at 17800 W…

Mayor to DARE Graduates: Resist Peer Pressure, Embrace Your Opportunities

Mayor Steve Ponto told Brookfield Elementary School fifth graders: "With all the exciting opportunities which you have to learn and grow, don’t get distracted by drugs or gangs. They will only hold you down."

Editor's Note: These are the Mayor's comments Thursday to D.A.R.E. graduates at Brookfield Elementary School: ________________________________________ Good morning to all of you. I’m delighted to be with you this morning and to have this opportunity to speak to you briefly. I want to sincerely congratulate each of you students on successfully completing the D.A.R.E. program. As you know, D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. UPDATED: Walker Touts Brookfield Plant Job Growth, Calls for Training

Gov. Scott Walker applauded Trace-A-Matic's facility and job expansions and said more training is needed to bridge the gap between highly skilled jobs and employees.

(Updated 1:35 p.m.) Gov. Scott Walker touted a Brookfield plant’s job growth Thursday as more evidence the state’s manufacturing sector was improving, but said training and matching highly skilled machinists remains an obstacle for many businesses. Walker said "everywhere I go" around the state, plant operators emphasize they can't find qualified, trained workers, despite unemployment of around seven percent. He encouraged the crowd of employees at Trace-A-Matic Corp. to help by encouraging others to enter manufacturing training programs at technical colleges and other venues. "Talk about the good careers and the good opportunities in manufacturing in this state," he said, adding that one of his sons, a high school junior, wants to pursue …

Milwaukee 7 Finds Success in Brookfield

Mayor Steve Ponto says "more initiatives are underway" following business expansions by Thomas Magnete USA and Milwaukee Electric Tool Corp.

Milwaukee 7 is a regional, cooperative economic development organization for the seven counties in Southeastern Wisconsin. Recently, I attended a Milwaukee 7 meeting in Racine. During the meeting, six “wins” for the organization in the preceding four months were highlighted. I was very pleased that two of the six “wins” for the seven-county area were in the City of Brookfield. The first win was the decision of Thomas Magnete USA LLC, a subsidiary of Thomas Magnete GmbH in Herdorf, Germany, to locate their production facility for North America in Brookfield. Thomas Magnete USA is a manufacturer of hydraulic equipment for the automotive and other machinery markets. In the next few years, the company will create 27 new jobs here. These will …

State Limits City's Tax Levy Increase to Less Than 1 Percent

Mayor Steve Ponto is recommending the city's property tax rate increase by 5 cents per $1,000 in assessed home value.

Brookfield Mayor Steven Ponto presented a $63.8 million budget for 2012 on Thursday, with a 1.8 percent increase in general fund spending and a 0.92 percent increase in the total property taxes collected for city government. The tax levy increase is just under the state allowable levy limit of 1 percent based on new city construction and growth. The tax rate would increase by 5 cents per $1,000 in assessed value. Ponto acknowledged the economic challenges the city faced for 2012 but described the budget as continuing “the City’s long-standing tradition of balancing financial responsibility, with providing premier quality public services for our citizens. The mayor's budget was introduced during a special Finance Committee meeting Thursday …

Brookfield Seeks Ruling that Employees Pay Pensions Despite Union Contracts

Having a union contract in place before Act 10 became law does not protect employees from making pension contributions, say Brookfield leaders who will seek ruling on their interpretation.

In a move that could impact public employees across the state, Brookfield city officials want to start deducting pension contributions and stop collecting dues from union employees before their current contracts expire, based on a provision tucked in those contracts. The city plans to seek a ruling from the state that could strip away a commonly held belief among union members: that having a contract in place before Act 10 became law exempted those employees from the sweeping changes until their contracts expire. Some local governments and school districts passed new contracts before the state Supreme Court ruled the collective bargaining law was in effect. Some of those new contracts required pension contributions; others did not. "I …

Commercial Development Key to Being Premier City

Brookfield has always been "open for business," with Target and Thomas Magnete the latest successes in a strong focus on economic development.

In these challenging economic times, governments at all levels are focused on economic development. States and cities are increasingly aggressive in recruiting businesses to their jurisdictions.   Governor Walker has emphasized that “Wisconsin is Open for Business.” The City of Brookfield has long emphasized the importance of its business sector. One of the chief reasons for Brookfield’s success is that it has a large commercial property tax base which has enabled us to have a relatively low property tax rate. In effect, the large commercial sector in our City is helping us maintain lower property tax rates for the benefit of all property taxpayers — most notably, residential property taxpayers — and still provide a high level of services…
