How Should School Administrators Handle Pranks?

It's been an active five weeks to open the school year, with brazen and sometimes-creative stunts authored by high school students. What's the right course of action for administrators?

If the first five weeks of high school this year are any indication, mischief is on the rise. Forget the more serious bomb threats in Greendale, Menomonee Falls and Racine; the goofiness has taken hold all over southeastern Wisconsin: What's the right reaction to pranks such as these? Police Report: Baby Formula Thefts and Toilet Paper Pranks

The latest police reports include thefts of baby power and vodka and suspicious toilet paper purchases.

Brookfield police are working with West Milwaukee officers on possible charges against two men they say stole baby formula from Pick 'n Save stores in both communities. Employees at Pick 'n Save, 12735 W. Capitol Dr., called Brookfield police Wednesday after a review of surveillance video uncovered two men stealing $539.70 in Gerber baby formula about 8 a.m. Saturday. The same two men were arrested Monday by West Milwaukee police after committing a similar theft at a Pick 'n Save there. Other recent activity in Brookfield police reports: Toilet papering prank: After a group of five young women bought "an abundance" of toilet paper at Pick 'n Save, 2205 N. Calhoun Rd., about 8:30 p.m. Saturday and told him they planned to T.P. people. …

Prank-Friendly Roundabout Home to Another One

Police found holiday decorations left in the Barker Road roundabout, other yard messes reported over the holidays.

If there's a place in Brookfield that has been the site for pranks and stunts, the roundabout at North Avenue and Barker Road ranks high on the list. The past six months have seen youth set up chairs there, stand and scream "roundabout!" to passing motorists and have the senior class bike en masse through it. Add to the mix: dump a plastic Frosty the Snowman and Christmas decorations. A Brookfield police officer on patrol New Year's afternoon found the holiday decorations in the roundabout. Just three hours prior, a San Marcos Drive homeowner had called police to say her four-foot-tall, lighted, hard plastic Frosty was stolen, but when shown the one found in the roundabout, she said it wasn't her snowman.
