Only one of seven board members argued to keep Hillside Elementary School open, although some members said they would consider a plan to keep it open by creating multi-age classrooms.
A majority of the Elmbrook School Board on Tuesday supported closing Hillside Elementary, but two members said they would mull over a former board president's proposal that might save as much money by creating multi-age elementary school classrooms. Hillside families, however, saw little hope for a last-minute save, as only one School Board member fought to keep the school open. Tonawanda in Elm Grove would remain open under a recommendation the Board will take to two community meetings to get feedback before final vote in October.
With difficulty getting board majority support, the Elmbrook School Board recommended Tuesday that the district close one elementary school at the end of the year — Hillside. Board members will ask community members at two upcoming meetings to offer feedback on closing Hillside before members vote on any school closure in late October. Those meetings are scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 29 at Brookfield East High School and 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at Brookfield Central High School. The Elmbrook School Board added more school closure options Wednesday but plans to narrow them to present two or three top choices for community consideration in September. The board might whittle the list at its Aug. 23 meeting at the district administration building, 13780 Hope St. One father urged the board to keep all six district elementary schools open, while other parents said there must be other ways to close projected budget deficits. Board President Tom Gehl said recent state changes have decreased Elmbrook's projected five-year deficit from $16 million to about $11 million. Hillside and Tonawanda Elementary schools continue to weigh heavily in potential school closure debate.
The Elmbrook School District could close two of its six elementary schools, save about $2.6 million per year and still have enough building space to educate its projected 10-year resident enrollment plus some open enrollment students, a new report says. But the report emphasized its authors were not making a recommendation that Elmbrook close two elementary schools. Rather, the report says its goal is "to establish a cost baseline defined by the minimum elementary school building capacity required to educate resident only Elmbrook students." Elmbrook needs to operate a minimum of four elementary schools to serve its future enrollment, the report says.
