After being soggy this morning, Brookfield is becoming a winter wonderland as the oncoming snowstorm made its way through town on Thursday. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from midnight Wednesday through 3 a.m. Friday for the City of Brookfield as it expects to have about 4 to 6 inches of snow and high winds from 10 to 20 mph. Gusts may be has high as 45 mph. This prompted Elmbrook School District to call off school today. The storm will bring rain, snow and mix sleet through this afternoon, into the evening and through tomorrow morning. About a half-foot of snow is expected Friday, but temperatures will rise from today's deep freeze.
Updated 8 a.m.: Forecasted snow totals for Friday have been changed to 2 to 4 inches. Temps will be cold again Friday morning, with wind chills between zero and 5 below zero. It's bitterly cold today — but not as cold as this week in 2009, when wind chills of 28 to 38 degrees below zero prompted Elmbrook to close schools two consecutive days. Wind chills this morning were between 10 and 15 below zero, according to the National Weather Service. Temps will reach a high of 7 today. But drivers should start preparing their vehicles for a snow storm tomorrow that could drop as much as 4 to 7 inches of snow, and be especially messy during Friday's evening commute.
