The Sunland Inc. plant that distributes products to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Kilwins, Target and others is linked to Salmonella contamination that made at least 41 people ill in 20 states.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Monday that it has blocked food distribution from the Sunland Inc. peanut butter plant in New Mexico whose products were subject to a wide recall in recent months because of salmonella contamination. The various types of Sunland peanut butter products — sold under several brands by major food retailers, including Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Kilwins Quality Confections, and Target — had been part of a voluntary recall that began in September and later was expanded to include other nut butters as well as processed nuts and peanuts. The FDA action announced Monday is a mandatory order. The company's nut products have been "linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney that has sickened 41 people …

The Brookfield store opened Monday with free leis, face-painting and the specialty products and wines have made the quirky grocery chain a big hit with fans.
Kris Woods laughed as she described the Brookfield Trader Joe's opening in a word: "Dangerous!" Dangerous because now that a second Milwaukee-area TJ's has opened in her Elm Grove backyard, she almost certainly will shop more often at her favorite grocer. "I just love the products," Woods said. "And I'm so happy that I don't have to make that drive." She typically would drive about once every two months to the store at Bayshore Mall in Glendale, filling her cart with Trader Joe's private brand specialty products such as Joe-Joe's (the store's version of Oreos) and the peppermint Joe-Joes that surface around the holidays. Other shoppers interviewed who showed up for the Brookfield store opening — residents from Wauwatosa, Brookfield and Elm…

The popular grocer will kick off with a "lei cutting," its unique twist on the traditional ribbon-cutting, before the doors open at 8 a.m.
Break out those Hawaiian shirts. The long-awaited opening of the second Trader Joe's grocer in the Milwaukee area — and third statewide — is happening in mere hours. At 7:50 a.m. Monday, the new Brookfield store at 12665 W. Bluemound Rd. will hold a "lei cutting" with Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto and Hawaiian-shirt-clad store employees, including Captain Jeff Clark (TJ's calls its managers "captains"). The store opens its doors 10 minutes later and will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. The store's phone number is (262) 784-4806. The popular Trader Joe's business — known for its almost cult-like following, fun and festive atmosphere and private label specialty products and wines such as "Two-Buck Chucks" — was a big "get" …

Kudos come in from a state commercial realtors association for Brookfield's new Target-anchored shopping center at which Trader Joe's opens Nov. 2.
Brookfield's newest shopping center — Underwood Crossing with Target, Trader Joe's and more — has been named retail development of the year by the Commercial Association of Realtors Wisconsin. Underwood Crossing is a class A, approximately 175,000-square-foot center at Bluemound Road and North 128th Street, developed by Ryan Companies US, Inc. In addition to a 140,000-square-foot Target with grocery, a Trader Joe's and PNC Bank are under construction and opening in November. The approved development includes future retail and restaurant, such as a frozen yogurt shop, hair salon and "fast-casual" eatery. "There have been many people and organizations who have been intimately involved in the success of developing Underwood Crossing," Tony …

About those rumors that Trader Joe's wasn't opening in Brookfield after all.... No worries! Not only did TJ's erect all its exterior building and monument signage in the past week, but its crews have moved in and are building the interior design. And starting on Monday, the store will be hiring. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, Trader Joe's will accept applications at the store, 12665 W. Bluemound Rd., said Jeff Clark, who is transferring from the Bayshore Mall store to run the Brookfield one. Trader Joe's is looking to hire "crew members." Assistant managers are called "mates" and there's one store manager who is the "captain." Employees wear Hawaiian shirts. Starting to get the idea this isn't your typical retail job? That's…

The long-anticipated Brookfield Trader Joe's opening is tenatively set for Nov. 2. Developer Ryan Cos. of Minneapolis, Minn., recently turned the newly constructed building to Trader Joe's to prepare for occupation, said Tony Barranco, Ryan Cos. vice president of development. The date could get accelerated or pushed back, Barranco cautioned. But he said last week about 30 workers for Trader Joe's were in the building, installing casings and racks, preparing the interior for opening. "They're doing a great job," he said. Signage still isn't in place. But exterior construction is complete, along with landscaping, dark green canopies and sconce lighting. The Brookfield location, at 128th and Bluemound Road, is Trader Joe's third Wisconsin …

A "fast-casual" restaurant, hair salon and frozen yogurt stand are planned for a 5,300-square-foot building to be constructed next to the soon-to-open Trader Joe's. Both food businesses plan to have small outdoor dining patios, under plans endorsed Monday by the city Plan Commission. But who the new specific tenants will be is yet unknown. Kyle Schott, project manager for developer Ryan Cos., said in an interview Monday that leases are still being finalized and were not yet signed. Examples of "fast casual" dining include Chipotle and Panera. Schott said the negotiations were close and construction hopefully would begin this fall, with the tenants opening their doors in winter or next spring. Plan commissioners recommended approval of the …

Developers say three other retailers will be announced soon for new shopping center on Bluemound Road.
Construction workers are bustling at the Trader Joe's site in Brookfield — dressing the parking lot with trees and installing the signature interior that will make the current building shell into a grocery destination. Though developers haven't set an opening date, Ryan Cos. Vice President of Development Tony Barranco said Monday they plan to open sometime in October. Trader Joe's will accompany Target, PNC Bank, and other unannounced retailers in Underwood Crossing, a new 170,000-square-foot shopping center on West Bluemound Road at North 128th Street. "We’re excited to have (Trader Joe's) join Underwood Crossing, and they’re going to be a dynamite addition to the Target there," Barranco said. Related: See photo gallery from …
