Bluemound Rd. Trader Joe's agreed to upgrade its architecture and landscaping on its southern side, which faces a frontage road that will be built and the Target store under construction.  The California-based grocery chain — which has a cult-like fan base and employees dressed in hawaiian shirts — is known for its …

Trader Joe's Gets Plan Commission OK; Eyes October Opening

City Council will also have to approve the planned development district that grants Trader Joe's exceptions to zoning codes.

With the unanimous approval of the Brookfield Plan Commission Monday, the proposed Trader Joe’s moved one step closer to opening this fall in the Underwood Crossing complex. The request for exceptions to some city zoning rules still will have to be approved by City Council before Trader Joe’s can move forward with construction. Architect Stephen Smith said Monday the company's goal is to open in October, just after PNC Bank and Target open in the shopping center at at 12821 W. Blue Mound Rd. “We view this as the gateway into Underwood Crossing and we’ve tried to design it as such," said Smith, president of Stephen Perry Smith Architects. The 12,500-square-foot store would be the third Trader Joe's in Wisconsin, joining locations in …

City Backs Changes to Pave Way for Trader Joe's

Aldermen will vote Feb. 7 on changes to accommodate Trader Joe's and a yet-unannounced junior anchor store next to Target, after plan commissioners backed the changes.

Changes to smooth the way for Trader Joe's to build in Brookfield have been recommended by the city Plan Commission, City Community Development Director Dan Ertl said. The only sticking point was a request to increase the height of parking lot light poles, he said. Trader Joe's, a specialty grocer known for its private label specialty products and wines, wants to build in Underwood Crossing, a new shopping center under construction at 12821 W. Bluemound Rd. to be anchored by a 140,000-square-foot Target store. Underwood developer Ryan Cos. agreed to investigate whether the three light poles closest to the western Columbia Gardens neighborhood could be at the city's maximum 20-feet height and still create enough light. If not, Ryan said it …

Developer: Trader Joe's Project 'Would Be Dead' if City Rejects Sign

But a requested variance to allow Trader Joe's on a monument sign drew no opposition Tuesday from aldermen or residents. Lights and traffic, however, raised some concerns.

Changes sought to accommodate construction of a Trader Joe's in Brookfield and a larger junior anchor store to the Underwood Crossing shopping center drew little opposition Tuesday from aldermen or residents. Tony Barranco, retail development director for Ryan Cos. of Minneapolis, MN, said the "most crucial" change sought was a variance to city sign codes that limit two tenants to a shopping center sign. Trader Joe's would be the third tenant on this particular sign. The California-based grocery chain — which has a cult-like fan base and is known for its private label specialty products and wines — will not build a second Milwaukee location in Brookfield if it can't have a presence on the shopping center's main monument sign, he said. "We'…

City Seeks Public Input on Changes for Trader Joe's

Developer Ryan Co. is seeking changes to accommodate Trader Joe's and a junior anchor, and to address neighborhood landscaping concerns.

A proposal to build a new Trader Joe's in Brookfield will be back on the agenda Tuesday, as aldermen seek public input on changes sought to a shopping center under construction, in part to accommodate Trader Joe's. Citizens can comment at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 2000 N. Calhoun Rd. The total size of the Underwood Crossing shopping center, being built at 12821 W. Bluemound Rd. on the former site of Quebecor World printing, would increase from 190,100 square feet to 201,601 square feet. The complex would include the existing Bluemound Bowl; a 140,000-square-foot Target store with grocery; a 3,800-square-foot PNC Bank; a junior anchor; and one or two buildings for Trader Joe's and a second retailer or restaurant. Developer Ryan Cos. …
