Underwood Crossing Wins Retail Development of Year

Kudos come in from a state commercial realtors association for Brookfield's new Target-anchored shopping center at which Trader Joe's opens Nov. 2.

Brookfield's newest shopping center — Underwood Crossing with Target, Trader Joe's and more — has been named retail development of the year by the Commercial Association of Realtors Wisconsin. Underwood Crossing is a class A, approximately 175,000-square-foot center at Bluemound Road and North 128th Street, developed by Ryan Companies US, Inc. In addition to a 140,000-square-foot Target with grocery, a Trader Joe's and PNC Bank are under construction and opening in November. The approved development includes future retail and restaurant, such as a frozen yogurt shop, hair salon and "fast-casual" eatery. "There have been many people and organizations who have been intimately involved in the success of developing Underwood Crossing," Tony …

Brookfield Trader Joe's Opening Date Set

The long-anticipated second Milwaukee area location for Trader Joe's has been set, as final construction touches are underway.

The long-anticipated Brookfield Trader Joe's opening is tenatively set for Nov. 2. Developer Ryan Cos. of Minneapolis, Minn., recently turned the newly constructed building to Trader Joe's to prepare for occupation, said Tony Barranco, Ryan Cos. vice president of development. The date could get accelerated or pushed back, Barranco cautioned. But he said last week about 30 workers for Trader Joe's were in the building, installing casings and racks, preparing the interior for opening. "They're doing a great job," he said. Signage still isn't in place. But exterior construction is complete, along with landscaping, dark green canopies and sconce lighting. The Brookfield location, at 128th and Bluemound Road, is Trader Joe's third Wisconsin …

Restaurant, Hair Salon and Fro-Yo Stand Planned Next to Trader Joe's

Ryan Co. is negotiating leases with those tenants for a new 5,300-square-foot building whose architecture was endorsed Monday by the city Plan Commission.

A "fast-casual" restaurant, hair salon and frozen yogurt stand are planned for a 5,300-square-foot building to be constructed next to the soon-to-open Trader Joe's. Both food businesses plan to have small outdoor dining patios, under plans endorsed Monday by the city Plan Commission. But who the new specific tenants will be is yet unknown. Kyle Schott, project manager for developer Ryan Cos., said in an interview Monday that leases are still being finalized and were not yet signed. Examples of "fast casual" dining include Chipotle and Panera. Schott said the negotiations were close and construction hopefully would begin this fall, with the tenants opening their doors in winter or next spring. Plan commissioners recommended approval of the …

Trader Joe's Plans October Opening in Brookfield

Developers say three other retailers will be announced soon for new shopping center on Bluemound Road.

Construction workers are bustling at the Trader Joe's site in Brookfield — dressing the parking lot with trees and installing the signature interior that will make the current building shell into a grocery destination.  Though developers haven't set an opening date, Ryan Cos. Vice President of Development Tony Barranco said Monday they plan to open sometime in October.  Trader Joe's will accompany Target, PNC Bank, and other unannounced retailers in Underwood Crossing, a new 170,000-square-foot shopping center on West Bluemound Road at North 128th Street. "We’re excited to have (Trader Joe's) join Underwood Crossing, and they’re going to be a dynamite addition to the Target there," Barranco said. Related: See photo gallery from …

Comparing this development with The Corners of Brookfield raises more questions. How can Underwood Crossing move ahead and announce committed retailers to its project in a short period of time, while The Corners/Marcus Corp has not been able to announce committed retailers--other than Von Maur--for more than a year? This is just one more red flag to consider when deciding whether to publicly …   more ›

Brookfield Target to Hold Job Fair, Hire 275 Workers

Target is hiring employees for its new Brookfield store on Bluemound Road at 128th Street, slated to open in July.

Target will hold a job fair in Brookfield this weekend to hire as many as 275 workers for its new store at Bluemound Road and 128th Street, slated to open in July. The job fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Country Inn & Suites, 1250 S. Moorland Rd., in Brookfield. The 140,000-square-foot Target store with grocery is being constructed as the anchor for a new retail complex called Underwood Crossing near Underwood Creek in Brookfield and Elm Grove. Trader Joe's Gets Final Approval to Build in Brookfield

Aldermen Tuesday gave final approval to permit construction of Trader Joe's in the Underwood Crossing center with a new Target store being built next to Bluemound Bowl at 128th and Bluemound Road.

Get ready for shovels in the ground. Aldermen Tuesday gave final approval for Trader Joe's to build in a new shopping center under construction in Brookfield — TJ's second location in the Milwaukee area and third in Wisconsin. The Brookfield Common Council unanimously approved a revised development agreement with Ryan Cos. to add construction of Trader Joe's to the Underwood Crossing shopping center being built at 12821 W. Bluemound Rd. Trader Joe's agreed to upgrade its architecture and landscaping on its southern side, which faces a frontage road that will be built and the Target store under construction.  The California-based grocery chain — which has a cult-like fan base and employees dressed in hawaiian shirts — is known for its …

Trader Joe's Gets Plan Commission OK; Eyes October Opening

City Council will also have to approve the planned development district that grants Trader Joe's exceptions to zoning codes.

With the unanimous approval of the Brookfield Plan Commission Monday, the proposed Trader Joe’s moved one step closer to opening this fall in the Underwood Crossing complex. The request for exceptions to some city zoning rules still will have to be approved by City Council before Trader Joe’s can move forward with construction. Architect Stephen Smith said Monday the company's goal is to open in October, just after PNC Bank and Target open in the shopping center at at 12821 W. Blue Mound Rd. “We view this as the gateway into Underwood Crossing and we’ve tried to design it as such," said Smith, president of Stephen Perry Smith Architects. The 12,500-square-foot store would be the third Trader Joe's in Wisconsin, joining locations in …
