No New Teacher Contract in Elmbrook

Superintendent says Elmbrook will not be among those school districts and governments rushing to approve contracts to avoid sweeping collective bargaining changes.

Elmbrook Schools Supt. Matt Gibson said his district will not rush through a new teachers contract before sweeping collective bargaining changes go into effect this month. Gibson and Elmbrook's finance administrator spoke before the Brookfield Common Council Tuesday night at the mayor's request to update aldermen on the district's budget issues. Ald. Bob Reddin asked Gibson if Elmbrook would approve a new teachers contract before March 25 to extend collective bargaining rights that will be eliminated when the governor's budget repair bill takes effect. Republican Senators Avoid Madison Because 'It's a Dangerous Place'

Assembly still expected to vote on amended budget repair bill passed by Senate on Wednesday night.

The GOP-controlled Assembly is expected to vote on a bill passed by the Senate on Wednesday night that suddenly ended the stalemate on the Gov. Scott Walker's budget bill but ignited an eruption of protesters. Those protesters might keep Republican Senators from heading to the State Capitol today. "We're told it’s a dangerous place to be," said state Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend), adding he will not be in Madison on Thursday. Grothman is the senator for District 20, which represents portions of Ozaukee, Washington, Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties. Republicans on Wednesday modified the bill so that it only needed a simple majority to pass — not the 20 votes that the original bill required. The bill retained all the provisions that …
