Not since the time of Nixon ----- really ????

Did we forget Reagan's Iran - Contra ...... oh, tha's right, he didn't know

Are we forgetting that Under Bush and the suspension of Habeas Corpus, the detention of hundreds of prisoners without charges ... or that his Attorney General -- not Bush --- authorized the torture of American Prisoners?

And less we forget --- the secret warrants and wiretapping of the AP was probably very legal, under the Patriot Act !!! I hope the Right Wingers know what that is --- it allows all kinds of neat stuff like Secret Warrants --- and even Secret Searches of Someone Residence --- yeah, they can break into your house, tear it apart and just leave and never let you know it was government agents who did it !!

I know the Right Wingers are very proud of their protecting their rights under the Second Amendment --- and heck, I agree with those rights too --- but just as the Right Wingers continue to fight against a government registry of guns --- they close their eyes to secret registries such as the No Fly List --- you probably wouldn't pay too much attention to it, unless you are on it -- but you don't get to know you are on it until you try to get on a plane and they say No Fly !!! -- and of course, they will not even tell you why you are on the list ....

I could go on and on --- and interestingly every example above with the Fed govt I believe has a parallel in the Walker years --- from Assembly to Governor !

I just happened to look at some of the postings on the left side of the Patch page and saw an article about a mother who faces incredible odds, dealing with illnesses of family members and her own illness, and yet who working hard for her family and is a True Example of Setting An Example.

The folks at Post would do well to take the time to recognize this woman (and so many others who share her virtues) --- she is Real World --- she is the kind of person who is a TRUE HERO !!

Maybe all the commentators above who have so much to say in this thread with their political agendas, could hop over to that article and recognize Lynn Molter with rational discourse about why Lynn Molter is more important to our society than any politician, of either party, will ever be.

Having been involved in Marketing for years, I have to wonder who the idiot at Post Grape Nuts was who decided to focus on a political family that is living off the government dole with two government paid, part time jobs, with great benefits --- and I am sure we could find just as many examples of Democratic Elected couples ---

Maybe the point Post was trying to make would have been better achieved with highlighting a mother who works a real life full time job, with crappy benefits, and maybe works a second job too, so she can raise her kids in a decent area with good schools ....

As evidenced by all the above blather which is the predictable result of a stupid decision by Post --- the Medium took over a dumb Message --- I am sure we have better PR and Marketing firms here in Milwaukee --- they should take note of this fiasco and send their portfolios into Post for consideration.

I have always found these kinds of comparisons to be less than useless --- especially if you are comparing the public and private sector --- kind of like comparing a two seat roadster with a station wagon --- other than both have a drive train and wheels --- they are completely different and not open to any intelligent comparison.

I guess you mean a surplus in "cash flow" terms.

It is always interesting to see how politicians -- both Dems and Reps -- use these terms, and how they spin what they are doing behind the scenes.

Is it really a surplus when we borrow $1 billion for road construction now? Won't generations to come be paying that bill --- of course we can cut the cash flow out by borrowing a huge sum and make small payments forever --- the old credit card trick.

Just how did the foreclosure settlement money figure into this so called surplus? We know that the money was paid to rectify horrendous expenses and devaluations caused by banks irresponsible and many times illegal handling of foreclosures Of course that would mean that most of that money would go to where most of that cost and damage is --- Milwaukee -- but as Walker and Reps are pretty much at war with Milwaukee and for some reason think it is a good idea to destroy this state's largest city and economic engine -- why not put that money into the general fund to help create a so called surplus --- Milwaukee is just collateral damage to the self interests of Walker and the Republican majority.

Not to say that Democrats don't do the same at times -- and not to say that this state hasn't done it before, using the tobacco settlement for everything except the reasoning behind the lawsuit and settlement.

    Surplus --- Really? --- LMAO

@c Good point --- after all WE do pay for their stadiums !!! And the movie industry gets tons of tax breaks from US --- and the Big Money they make is over the public airways on TV and regulated cable services --- I wouldn't say though to tax the individual players, but tax the teams on the gross revenue they receive from TV, Cable, Closed Broadcasts, DVDS and whatever other media --- that money could be used percentage wise on their stadiums (much as truckers pay a fuel tax so they have roads to drive on) --- and as a byproduct, they won't be able to pay players hundreds of millions of dollars, but only millions of dollars.

@AA I am sure we could debate the fine points of Welsh's tenure -- I don't disagree that he did do many things right --- but he also didn't get the nickname Neutron Jack for nothing -- and no matter what he did, his main concern in my opinion was for himself.

As for IH -- yes there is Navistar -- it is but a pathetic remnant of what was once a great company with a much larger market share and much more diverse product offerings.

The war being waged against Milwaukee by Walker and the Republicans is the classic cutting off the nose to spite the face.

And WHY??? What is there to gain by them destroying the largest city in Wisconsin, and the Heart of Wisconsin's economy ?

    1) Destroy the unions that did NOT contribute to their political coffers.
    2) Destroy the public schools through the war on the unions and the expansion of voucher schools.
    3) Deny Milwaukee its light rail revitalization program.
    4) Wage war on the Milwaukee County Government.
    5) Divert foreclosure settlement money intended for Milwaukee to the State.
    6) Actively work to destroy housing values and tax base with putting an end to Residency requirements in the budget bill (questionable if legal).

The one action that Walker took that might have shown some promise was the restructuring of the WDC ---- alack and alas, Walker choose to Chair that commission himself, and appointed lackies and no nothings to run it. QUESTION: Will Walker now step up and take full responsiblity for the WDC lack of controls, illegal expenditures, and miserable results ???

The answers to Lyle's question are complex and not easy and I am not pretending to be proposing them here.

What I am proposing is that instead of the far left and far right comments about government involvement in the economy and business --- Reality Check --- they are and have always been intertwined --- they depend upon each other working with each other!

In Wisconsin, we are seeing the kind of management of our economy that fits in with the tear down and destroy model.

Walker and the Republicans turn away about a Billion Dollars in a Luddite aversion to a new technology known as fast rail. They turn away Millions and Millions more in protest against Obamacare and incur more costs for us in what our medical costs will be. They borrow money now to build new roads that our klds will be paying for until they die, They take settlement money for the destruction of neighborhoods in the foreclosure fiasco and put it in the general fund, instead of using it proportionately for those who suffered the most, and for who the money was intended (precedent set by the pilfering of the tobacco settlement money). Now they are actively working to weaken our environmental laws for the fast buck of mining finite resources, and a very pithy return of job development in exchange, if not a negative, if the degradation of our streams and lakes and forests is considered with its lessened tourism, fishing and hunting dollars.

All of that considered, the worse sins of Walker and the Republicans are those they are committing in a blatant attempt to destroy Milwaukee !!!!!

Why so called Republicans are in favor of over-riding local control for a centralized approach in governing Milwaukee is befuddling at best.

Over the years we have witnessed many good and solid companies that were stripped of their assets and liquidated because there was more profit to be made in selling what was built, than in continuing to run it.

That may make good sense in a micro economic sense for the raiders who buy up and chop up those companies -- but it is also a one time deal --- quick money made for a few, and no jobs or continuing operations contributing to the community.

I have also seen good and solid companies that became mere whispers of what they once were, due to incompetent management -- case in point, International Harvester was decimated by a CEO who thought it was more important to fight the unions than work with them --- everybody lost.

At the present time, we see the enormous greed of management in many companies --- CEO's in the US making 380 times or more the average wage in the companies they run -- nowhere else in the world does that happen as matter of course as it does here in the USA. Like the old westerns in which the town folk hire a gun slinger to help them beat off the bad guys -- they end up hostage to someone who could care less about them --- it is all about him. Neutron Jack is a perfect example of this kind of CEO --- Lee Iacocca may be an example of the opposite.
