Lynne: Be assured, I don't take offense to it at all. As you said ... no big surprises in what you all have said.
I would say that Patch's focus hasn't shifted to getting more site traffic; that's always been what we've wanted. We just know better what accomplishes that than when we first launched here. Often it really is great coverage of intense local issues, like what's happening with the Menomonee Falls Radisson or when Trader Joe's was opening in Brookfield. But your run-of-the-mill board meeting is not always time well spent for our editors, of whom a lot is asked. Aside from a handful of very committed citizens, people neither attend these meetings nor read the reports generated by editors who do. So we try to pick our spots — and those spots are different in every community.
As always, if there's an important civic issue going on that we're not reporting on — let us know. We will make every effort to do it well.

ReplyOK, ouch. Some good body shots here. But the folks commenting here are some of the Milwaukee-area Patches’ most engaged customers, and have been from the very beginning. A response is deserved.
Patch aims to provide a variety of things to our communities, from “hard news” to community info to a place to vent, debate and angrily post links. In deciding which of those things to do with their time each day, our editors pay close attention to what users click on and what they don’t, what they comment on and what they don’t, and so on. It's a data-driven business, different than it was when many of us were in newspapers and the only feedback was an angry phone call about the TV section. Meanwhile, as you see from your "Googling," we're doing it with fewer physical resources than we once had, which provides its own set of challenges.
Patch is a very fluid operation, always changing, and so we appreciate when you tell us how you feel about something on Patch, good or bad. Please keep commenting, contacting editors and pointing out those things in our communities which you feel everyone should know. We're not perfect and hope to only get better. Thank you for your continued interest.

Lynne: We miss Lisa too. Are there particular big stories that we're missing right now, which we should be covering? We try to keep a close eye on development and school coverage, but recently have not found much that's resonated with our Brookfield audience.

On the article Who Should Pay for a New Downtown Milwaukee Arena?

ReplyBob: It would be part of the deal to keep the team here. He has no heirs, nobody to give the money to, and he has never wavered from wanting the team in Milwaukee. He sells the team, probably for a discount, with a promise to in large part fund an arena on behalf of the new owner; the new owner would promise to keep the team in Milwaukee. It's a bit of a shell game — why doesn't the new owner just use that money to build it himself, instead of handing to Herb? — but I expect that's how it will eventually be explained to the public.

ReplyIf there is a new arena — not a given; the Bucks certainly could move to Seattle — expect Herb Kohl will pay for a lot of it, no doubt, with proceeds from selling the team. The team is valued at just more than $300 million; a new arena would be about $400-500. That still leaves a pretty notable gap but one that could be done in part by a new owner as well. The bigger problem is not just the arena; that entire downtown region needs an overhaul to become a draw for people from the suburbs. Especially if the Bucks remain no better than pedestrian. You have the MATC welding school right to the north, an empty Park East area, the old U.S. Cellular Arena ... a lot to be worked on and it's a complicated web of entities (Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co, Bradley Center Board, Wisconsin Center District, MATC) that have to pull the same direction.
