The pilot of a small airplane that crashed into a marsh near the Capitol Airport in Brookfield at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday apparently escaped without injuries, authorities said.

However, the pilot, the only occupant of the plane, was still evaluated by emergency personnel Tuesday afternoon to see whether he needed medical treatment, City of Brookfield Fire Chief Charlie Myers said.

There is no word on the reason for the crash, Myers said.

The Capitol Airport is a volunteer airport and doesn't have a control tower. When the plane crashed, volunteers at the airport communicated with the pilot on a radio, who said he was in a swamp in an upside-down position, Myers said.

“He didn’t seem to be in any distress whatsoever and was able to communicate with the Capitol Airport personnel very well," Myers said.

Rescue personnel initially were unable to find the plane. First responders had to walk in water about 2-feet deep and it took about 10 minutes to find the location of the plane, which was eventually found by a Flight for Life helicopter.

The pilot, whose name has not been released, flew a Vans RV 6, which Myers described as an experimental-type aircraft.
